Event Spotlight - Fall Festival Countdown

Three (count 'em) days til Fall Festival kicks off! As if you need reminding...

Not only do we have the traditional fabulous standards, like art vendors on Saturday and Sunday, the amazing pumpkin carver Scott Cummins, food and, of course, the Beer & Wine Garden, but a couple things that will set this year apart:

the country flavored rock'n'roll of Firefall, not to mention local favorites like Wendy Woo, Soul Sacrifice, Chris Daniels & the Kings, and Tim Duffy & the Rocky Mountain All Stars at the Wild Oats Music Stage

  • a Children's Carnival, with everything from games to rides to jumping castles
  • the Rocky Mountain Raptors, complete with birds of prey, and over 20 more non-profit booths
  • Did I mention the Beer & Wine Garden?

It may not exactly be Oktoberfest (though there WILL be a polka band on Saturday afternoon!) but it will be a good time for everyone. So grab your stein and the kids, if you have 'em, and get yourself Downtown this weekend.

And if you have a good time, make sure to let us know! If we get some good Fall Fest stories, you can be sure that we'll post them.

Still not convinced? Check out the Fall Festival webpage!

Call for Volunteers - You Know You Like Beer

So Fall Festival approaches -- it's this weekend, people! Are you excited? Are ya? We are, in case you didn't notice... It should be an awesome time, but it would be even more awesome if we had enough volunteers for the Beer & Wine Garden on all three days of the Festival, Friday to Sunday September 29th - October 1st.

We're hoping that you like Fall and Beer as much as we do, in fact that you like them so much you want to get involved. If you are interested in volunteering, you can contact me, Jenn, at 303.449.3774 or jenn@dbi.org.

Pretty please?

Weekend Spotlight- Beer, Fall, Art and John Lennon

We're still looking for Beer Tent volunteers for Fall Festival next weekend, September 29th to October 1st. So get in the spirit of Oktoberfest and contact Renae Foxhoven (renae@dbi.org) to claim a shift!

And in other news,

  • The traveling Artwork of John Lennon exhibit has come to Boulder just for this weekend, Friday September 22nd to Sunday September 24th. It's the first time the exhibit has been here, and who knows when it will be back, so don't miss your chance to see original pieces by almost everyone's favorite Beatle (I confess, George is my favorite, but don't tell Yoko).
  • BMoCA has just announced their Website Redesign. I was a fan of the old version, but the new one looks amazing! So hop on over and take a look at bmoca.org.

Event Spotlight: Summer Concert Series

The bricks were sizzling this summer, and it wasn't just from the heat! The Downtown Boulder Concert Series enjoyed another great summer with both Bands on the Bricks and Noon Tunes. While the music ranged from classical to cajun to celtic and of course good 'ol fashioned rock n' roll, one thing remained constant: the dancing!

Noon Tunes kicked off the season with Soul Sacrifice, a Santana cover band and probably one of the more straight-forward rock acts we have ever had in Downtown Boulder. It was the perfect high energy kick off to what turned out to be a diverse set of acts. Throughout its twelve week run the standout acts included: the looping magic of Arthur Lee Land, the cajun flair of Zydeco, and the downhome bluegrass sounds of the Stanleytones.

Bands on the Bricks reached a milestone this year by having zero concerts rained out! If you have been enjoying these concerts over the years you know that this is indeed quite an occurrence. With the weather cooperating we had a chance to experience some great music from some well known bands and some newcomers to Bands on the Bricks. Girls on Top kicked in off in their usual fashion, Hazel Miller wowed the crowd as only she can, and newcomers Onda kept everyone on their feet with some swinging salsa jams. Wendy Woo seemed to draw the largest crowd this year, but it was a tough call as the bricks were packed every Wednesday night with people experiencing the fun of outdoor music on the Pearl St. Mall.

Thanks to Kory Koponen, Operations Manager and Resident Music Critic, for this post.
