As I sit here staring at the chocolate cupcake Eli fetched me from the kitchen this morning, and debate whether to eat it or not, I'm sad it's my last day as communications intern here at Downtown Boulder. No more free Monday morning treats for me. :( Hopefully, I'll be heading into the real world with some sort of brand/design/advertising/social media job, but in reality, I'll probably just intern again. Sigh.

If you or anyone you know is looking for an internship, you should take my position. I've had my share of internships, and it really is on the top tier of working for free. You get all the free coffee and tea you want, a nice comfy chair, and the opportunity to exchange witty banter with the redheaded man a seat away. You can view the listing on Craigslist here. Do it!

Probably the most important thing I've learned here is how social media can tie a community together. Reading Downtown Boulder's twitter feed everyday has exposed me to so many different social media marketing strategies, some of which are more successful than others. If you aren't on Twitter following @downtownboulder and downtown businesses, you are missing out on a whole world of culture. It is interesting to see which businesses interact with others and how relationships on Twitter evolve. Plus, you can find out about special offers, sales, and events all over downtown. For example, Atlas Purveyors offers coffees and teas for $1 if you keep an eye out for and mention their tweets. Also, Pizza Colore tweets when employee Kimmy whips up something delicious and creative. Her pies always sell out in a matter of minutes after the tweet, so you better get booking when you read one that makes your mouth water. Also, you should follow me on twitter. I don't offer deals, but I do tweet about interesting things happening in the design/ad world and the cutest animals ever, my dog and cat Sunday and Arnold.

Thanks Downtown Boulder, I'll miss you!

Lettuce Entertain You

If I've learned one thing in the almost eight years I've lived in Boulder, it's that the town is full of entertainers. Everybody wants to act, sing, dance, perform, and make you laugh. Some are not so successful (I'm talking to the two guys dressed in grunge yelling Ramones' songs on Pearl the other day) and some attract crowds in droves (the tiny plastic box guy comes to mind). There are open mic nights galore, karaoke, slide presentations, etc etc etc.

The Boulder International Fringe Fest (running through the 29th) is a great place for all aspiring superstars to seek inspiration. The festival hosts barnstormers from local, national and international destinations on a mission to captivate, amuse, and knock 'em dead. Performances range from condensed operas featuring Pinnochio in a post-apocalyptic setting to a couple dudes playing video games with their electric guitars to groovy dancin' music. All the events are scheduled to start after a (normal) work day, but if you got stuff ta do, at least head back downtown for the Daily CRAB, which is like cocktail hour and a variety show with Fringe artists mixed into one. Hosted by Boulder's own Dave Burdick, it's a fun way to wind down (or up).

If you hate having fun, at least check out one of the hosting venues to support local businesses. The Fringe Fest helped to generate approximately $750K in revenue for Boulder shops--which is majorly awesome!

Tickets are cheap, or you can check out the site for discounted punch passes and take all your friends on the cheap; you'll be the office hero and get free drinks all night, probably!

So, let's recap reasons to see a show before you're out of luck: 1. Funny and/or entertaining, 2. Cheap, 3. Supports local revenue, 4. Free drinks (maybe in some cases).

Sounds pretty solid to me, I think you should check it out. Mix it up a bit, cuz you know the zip code guy gets a little redundant sometimes. I mean, it's not fun if he never gets stumped.

DIY Drinks @ Salt the Bistro

Do-it-yourself (DIY) is all the rage these days. The American consumer has evolved into one that thinks they know best and prefer to have the most control possible over what they buy. NikeID? Boom, success. iGoogle? everything you want in one place, awesome! Salt, Chef Bradford Heap's restaurant that took the place of Tom's Tavern, is taking the phenomenon of mass customization a little closer to home with the launch of their new drink concept, Cocktail Element. Guests design their own cocktail recipes, using a “make-your-own” menu, by circling a spirit/base, flavor element, style, and size. They also have the opportunity to name their creation.

Keeping true to Salt style, (the best food travels the shortest distance from farm to table), ingredients such as herbs and syrups are grown/made in house whenever possible.
The best thing about this whole idea is that creator, Evan Faber, notes suggestions of parings based on the spirit you choose. Definitely helpful, as we are all not master mixologists. Given free reign to make my own cocktail, two things would happen: I tend to cave when presented with too many options, so I would immediately get flustered and panic and then after talking through my crisis for ten minutes, I would circle everything because I can't make up my mind and end up with some truly awful drink like cinnamon tequila fizz. So if you hear about any drink that starts out with Gage's ______, don't order it.

Live the local and check out what's going on at Salt and the rest of Downtown Boulder this weekend. Oh, and proceed cautiously today because it's Friday the 13th! Boo! (You jumped)

It's that time of year again; where packing seems to take over my free time, and Target trips become more important than sleeping. Yes, Downtown Boulder readers, it is officially college move-in season. I am headed back to the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. But before I go, I'm hosting a friend from school in Boulder for a few days. And while I am extremely excited for her visit, she has made one HUGE error in her trip planning. She's only coming to Boulder for 3 days. Why anyone in their right mind would do that is beyond me, but I think I have what will be a very successful plan for her short time here.

Even though my friend (being from Seattle) has said that I could just show her the sun for the whole time and she'd be happy, I think I can do better than that. This may come as a shock, but I am going to try and spend as much time in Downtown Boulder as possible (and I'm not just saying that because I work here). It really is the best place to bring out of towners if you don't have much time to give them a taste of Boulder. You can see the Flatirons, get a Boulder t-shirt, and Boulder postcards. And on top of that, you can get in some seriously fun "Boulderite watching". Which for those of you that don't spend much time downtown, is just a WAY more interesting version of "people watching". So, the next time you're down here, pause to take a look around at all the awesome people, you will not be bored.

I am a little stressed out about showing her all I want to show her, but I'm sure once I wade through all the awesome things to do in Boulder that it will be a first-rate visit (as long as she plans on not sleeping).

All things considered, there really is no better feeling than getting the chance to show off the place where I have had the privilege of growing up, especially with it being beautiful Boulder. I will definitely miss it a lot.

Time to go pack my raincoat... peace out Boulder!

Sigh.
It's the second week in August, and that means back to school for everyone but me. As a child, I'd watch out the window for the mailman like a vicious Doberman. The second I spotted him, I'd race out to see if today was the day he was going to deliver my highly anticipated school supply list. The second I got my anxious little paws on it, I begged my mom to go shopping. Something about new, clean notebooks and crayons with perfect points drove this little redhead wild, and still does. Alas, this year I won't get to indulge on the smell of fresh paper. Graduating is overrated.

Good thing there is a new crop of freshman to take my place. 6000 of them to be exact. Next week, the out-of-state orientation begins, and if you've never been in Boulder this time of year, you're in for a treat (read: sarcasm). Not only are the 6000 freshman here, their moms and dads are too, and siblings and grandma, if we're lucky. It would be a good week to ride your bike to work to say the least. Driving 5 miles will take 20 minutes. Also, avoid Target for a good 3 weeks, if you can. The freshman pick the place bone dry like the Grinch on Christmas Eve. They will spend about $821 dollars on back to school spending, slightly more than other classes. That totals over $240 million dollars for Boulder over the next few weeks. Hotels and restaurants will be booked solid, so if you have a date or celebration coming up, you might be SOL. Good news for downtown Boulder businesses though!

If I sound bitter, you're spot on. I'm so incredibly jealous of the little 18 year old's I could stuff one in a closet and steal their identity. My four years at CU were the greatest of my life, and I wish the time machine had been perfected so I could go back and do it all again. Yes, the dorms and all.

So if you're near campus next week and hear muffled sounds coming from a trash can that has a top mysteriously chained on, don't worry about it, I'll occasionally toss them some scraps from Libby Dining Hall.

The 100 year rumor...

With all the fuss about the eight inches of hail in Ned Wednesday, it's hard not to be thinking about the hundred year flood. And honestly, every time we get a huge storm, I can't help but wonder, "could this be the one?". After all, we are 16 years overdue for the so-called 100 year flood disaster (the last one occurring in 1894). But what does 100 year flood even mean? As far as I can tell, from internet research and that week in 8th grade we spent talking about the flood in my geology class (I'm obviously an expert), it's really just a flood that had a very low chance of being equaled or exceeded in the same year. And really, it's just the way that F.E.M.A. designates high risk areas.

When I went to Boulder High, we had regular flood drills, every floor would move up one floor, because supposedly the water would not surge higher than the first story. The students look at these drills in one of two ways, it's either "YES! no class for ten minutes!" or "Come on, this is just ridiculous, like this is actually ever going to happen..." The latter being the most problematic. Unless people are as paranoid as I am (which, believe me, is a very rare occurrence), they aren't going to know how bad this could be if it actually happens. As you can tell from the graphic, which is actually a 500 year flood prediction, meaning 5 times more dramatic than the 100 year prediction, this flood would be seriously devastating. If it actually follows predictions, the majority of Downtown Boulder would be fine, but my wonderful high school? underwater. *insert some Fairview/Boulder High rivalry joke here* Yeah, yeah, you're on a hill Fairview, but you have no windows... so THERE!

Anyway, back to what this is actually about, inform yourselves Downtown Boulder Readers. Even if it doesn't happen in your lifetime, you'll have read about some pretty interesting disaster scenarios, and seen some cool graphics. Its actually kind of hilarious to read the over dramatized stories, and learn that we are in fact well prepared, with disaster plans, and one of the most high tech warning systems in the nation. And whats more, at least you can still shop downtown before, during, and after the flood hits, right?? shameless plug... obviously...

As an intern, it's my job to update the events calender on the Downtown Boulder website. As a result, I come across many interesting things that I wouldn't have known about if it weren't for this job. One of the coolest events? Read to the Dog, a chance for readers to build their confidence levels at the Boulder Public Library on Arapahoe. On various Thursdays, the library has certified therapy dogs come in and settle down for some quality reading time. The public is encouraged to come in and practice reading aloud to these non-judgmental companions. How cute is that? Not only are therapy dogs angels sent from heaven, studies show that human/animal interaction actually lowers blood pressure and heart rate.
Other benefits of dog interaction include:

Children who have dogs tend to be more self-reliant, sociable, and less selfish than children without pets.
Elderly people with dogs are better able than non-pet-owning elderly people to cope with daily activities.
Owning a dog gives isolated people a routine, a sense of purpose, and a sense of fulfillment that helps prevent depression and loneliness.
Stroking and patting a dog can be relaxing, which is measured by a slower heart rate and a drop in blood pressure.
Owning a dog can help reduce the risk of asthma.
Dog owners are more likely to survive heart attacks than non-pet owners are.
The presence of a dog can ease the effects of Alzheimer's.
People with dogs have been found to have lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels when compared to people who do not.

You all know how much I love my dog, Sunday. Although I don't think she could ever become a certified therapy dog (she hates, and I mean run for the hills, I'm going to die, hates, loud noises), she definitely qualifies as my psychologist, reminding me that most of the time a walk and a kiss can fix any bad situation.

Also, as a tribute, one Sunday's friends, Lucy, a 4 year old Golden Retriever, passed away this weekend in an accident involving a hot car. Lucy was a bold and adventurous pup who loved to hike Loveland Pass in the snow and fetch sticks from Boulder Creek in the summer. So please, even if you parked in the shade, don't leave your dog in the car. Brain damage and suffocation can occur within minutes, even if the temperature outside is only in the 60's. The sun's rays are intense in Boulder. It's not worth the risk.

Foamy, Chocolately Paradise in a Cup

About two weeks ago, I started reading the book Eat Pray Love(soon coming to a movie theater near you, but please read the book first). For those of you who haven’t read it, the first section in the book is just as you would imagine, about eating, and more specifically, eating Italian food. I myself happen to LOVE food. Literally LOVE it; especially European fare. If I could jump on a plane right now and go to Italy, or France, or… really anywhere not in the U.S., I would do it (minus the whole “broke college student thing”).

Reading Eat Pray Love made clear how much I was longing for a cute European-esque café to go to. It took me a few days and being asked to write a blog to realize that I had already found it. Oliv You and Me in beautiful Downtown Boulder is a little taste of Europe right here in our little Boulder bubble. From the title you can probably infer they sell olive oil, but what most people don’t know is that Oliv You and Me serves the best mocha latte in town. Of course there are some that would beg to differ, but trust me, the foam is velvet heaven (see picture above).

Furthermore, the owner, Patti, is a Boulder native. And even though she went to Fairview and I went to Boulder High, I still support her business, which is definitely saying something. So listen up Downtown Boulder readers, Love the Local, and support one of our own!

On a side note, Oliv You and Me is on a side street (pun intended) just north of the bricks on Broadway. So go a little out of your way and get some amazing coffee, it's worth it, I promise.

Wanting What I Can't Have

I miss snow. And sweaters, and scarves and snowboarding. I miss trekking through a foot of snow to EVERYWHERE because I don't have a car. I miss watching people fall; That two second scramble when someone is fighting gravity's inescapable pull over ice is just fabulous. I can't help but LOL every time. Sorry people, I'm not laughing at you, but with you, and I know somewhere deep down inside, you're chuckling too. For heaven's sake, this is why I moved to Colorado: to live among falling ice crystals. Have you noticed I want what I can't have? Here we are, deep in the midst of summer, and I'm longing for a blizzard.

But sure enough, six months ago you could find me laying on campus post-fall, screaming for sundresses. I had just finished Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver (excellent, read it now), and I wanted a garden and turkeys and the luxury of flourishing flora. I headed into spring with high ambitions for a garden from seed, but that didn't work out exactly as I planned. Maybe next year.

Luckily, the Boulder Farmer's Market goes into swing every Wednesday and Saturday to satisfy my desire to eat seasonally. Every time I go, thoughts of cold weather are driven far from my mind, and I'm so so happy it is summer. Right now, harvest is just about at its peak. The first week of August- it's on. One word: tomatoes. They aren't even worth buying any other time of the year except for the end of summer. OMG. There is something heaven-sent about a good tomato. I usually spend an hour picking out the perfect fruit from all of the different vendors, and then eat it like an apple while strolling around, making several trips to sample the goat cheese from Haystack Farms. Once my tomato is sitting safely in my belly, I'm on a mission for the perfect peach. F* Georgia. Colorado peaches are the bomb diggity. Seriously. Secret of the century. Lucky for me, the first peaches of the season are ready to go, and will be in abundance tonight.

Corn, fava beans, cherries, berries, squash and zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots are just some of the many fruits and veggies available right now. One of my favorite dishes lately has been a cauliflower puree topped with garlic sauteed vegetables. It's similar in constancy to mashed potatoes but healthier. I simply steam the cauliflower, add it to the food processor, add a healthy dollop of ricotta cheese, a little S&P, and puree til smooth. Cauliflower is high in folate, fiber, and contains the same phytochemicals as broccoli, so don't let the absence of color trick you into thinking it is worthless. The result? A filling dish with way less starch than if you used potatoes. Yum. I love summer. Most of the time.

On another note, Loveland Ski Area starts making snow in LESS THAN TWO MONTHS. Bring. It. On. Just in time for apples and pumpkins. Who says you can't have it all?

The Small Intestine's Guide to Downtown

With more and more people across the US becoming aware they have a gluten intolerance, we decided it was time to make clear the restaurants in Downtown Boulder that are knowledgeable about gluten and can help you choose menu items free of certain grass related grains. Over 3 million Americans have Celiac's Disease, but only about 1 in 4,700 get diagnosed. People with the disease suffer intestinal damage whenever they consume products containing gluten, and often restaurants are unsure of which of their menu options contain it. Enter: Downtown Boulder.

When you visit our website under the "Dining" tab, you can choose the "Gluten-Free" category on the right to display the list of restaurants. Some even have a special gluten-free menu, like Aji. Abo's delivers their classic New York pizza taste in the form of a 12" gluten-free pizza. At Bacaro, you don't even have to ask which plates are gluten-free, because they are indicated on the menu, although it's always a good idea to tell your server you are avoiding gluten intentionally. Craving Mexican? Everything on the Chipotle menu is gluten-free (besides the tortillas, of course) . Zoe Ma Ma, a new place on 10th where Spud Brothers used to be, serves up delicious Chinese street food, unique for Boulder. Many dishes are gluten-free. The Vegan Potstickers fall under this category and were flavorful and moist when I stopped in to check it out last week. For those with a sweet tooth, you can still satisfy your craving while sticking to a diet. Tee and Cakes offers cupcakes every day that are gluten-free.

My list is only partial, so make sure to check out our website to find other great dining options in Boulder friendly to those who just can't digest those proteins found in wheat, barely, rye, or various other grains.

The Rainy Day Blues

I should have known better than to get out of bed this morning. Any idiot knows that rain = movie and pizza in bed. Rain ≠ work. But glutton for punishment that I am, I rolled out from under the covers, curled my hair, stashed a banana in my purse and ran out the front door. This is where it starts to get good.

Since I'm a fashionista, I wore a skirt today. D'oh. But since I like to sleep in till approximately thirty-two minutes before my bus leaves, there was no time to change when I stepped outside to see it POURING. At least I didn't bother with shaving my legs this morning.

Next in line to ruin my day was the construction flagger, letting by three cars at a time. It took ten minutes to get through one intersection! So of course that meant that right as I pulled up to the bus stop, my bus was pulling out. Luckily, the next bus was scheduled to arrive in half an hour so I only had to stand in the rain for twenty-eight minutes. Curly hair? Poof! Gone.

I finally get to my office forty-five minutes late, freezing, and one last kick in the shins--coffee pot is empty.

So now, I'm sitting here at my desk, dreaming of a cozy afternoon in a coffee shop or a bookstore with a hot chai or a cappuccino and some Vonnegut. But guess what? I'm in Denver and there really isn't anything cozy about Denver. (Unless you want to huddle with the panhandlers.) All I can do is implore you, Downtown Boulder readers, to let me live vicariously through you, lounging in some warm, hustling bustling downtown location, frittering the day away...

Come on, give it up--where are you spending your rainy day, and with what book?

"Don't tell me this town ain't got no heart..."

Happy Friday everyone!

I'm a DBI intern by day, but a server at Abo's on Pearl by night. Last night, the Thursday night bike ride cruised by Abo's while I was working, and everyone in the restaurant turned to survey the source of the ruckus. This was the largest ride I'd seen. American flag capes, silver stars, and patriotic hats were numerous as the crew raced by in the cool twilight. A table of visiting Texans were sitting near the front, and the looks on their faces expressed wonder and a little bit of alarm. As we watched, I explained to them that this happened every Thursday night in Boulder, and it seemed to be particularly large because of the upcoming holiday. "Well I'll be..." one woman exclaimed and turned to her husband with a smile.

Being able to explain the eccentricities of our town to tourists made my heart swell with pride. Boulder's not for everyone, but if it is, you love it with all your heart. You may long for beaches or cooler summers, lush greenery or more rain, but this little town is hard to leave when it comes down to it. I know people who have moved away and find frustration in trying to ride a road bike to work, or sadness at the bland population of "normal" people. I try to never take Boulder for granted. Whenever I find myself becoming too self-centered, I take a deep breath and a minute to look up at the Flatirons. They humble me more than anything. Even after 4 years, they do it to me every time. I hope that never fades. Their beauty astounds.

Milk was a bad idea...

Holy mackerel, it's hot out! Actually, I wouldn't really know because I'm imprisoned in a cubicle all day with no windows, but that's what I hear anyway. In any case, I still like to make lists so I am making one with all the best, coolest, summer treats downtown--just for you!

1. If you haven't had a mojito at Centro, you must be crazy. There is nothing more refreshing than chilled rum and fresh mint and they make the best in town--hands down. They're pretty much famous for 'em.

2. If you're not into the booze, check out Atlas Purveyors for their assortment of chilled beverages. There is a tea slush, frozen house chai and boba, which is fun because it has a giant straw. Also, I hear there is some mysterious drink called the Kitzel Special...

And I can't leave out The Cup because they combine two wonderful things: coffee and milkshakes. And milkshakes and other flavors, if you must.

And last but not least, go for Ma Ma's Oolong Tea at Zoe Ma Ma's...Mama always does make it best!

3. Fro-yo for sho. Cefiore is all natural and all delicious. I would recommend the tart original with your choice of toppings. (or mochi, Eli swears by the mochi...)

Also, Two Spoons has housemade gelato in different flavors everyday...drool. The last time I was in there I had Mango Chile--sounds nuts, but it's not. It's fruit.

4. If you need something a little more substantial, how 'bout ceviche from Aji? Fish, flash-cooked in citrus juice makes a great summer night dinner after a long hot day...

5. For something a little different, try the mango lassi at Sherpa's -- it's basically a fruit smoothie with yogurt, but it goes perfectly with spicy Indian dishes like tandoori chicken.

Or take your craving over to Bombay Bistro where they mix it with SoCo.

6. And last but not least, a Boulder standby is a giant marg at the Rio on the rooftop deck with a bowl of chips and salsa (one of my favorite salsas in town). Good news: they have a mini marg for $2.50 around lunch time for those really long days. No, I'm not endorsing drinking at work, just during your lunch break.

Risk of Wildfire

This past Thursday was Ignite Boulder 11 at Chautauqua Auditorium. This was my first time going to the event, but I can say that I'll never miss one again. Ignite featured 15 different speakers, called "Sparks," from the Boulder community who have something to say, whether it is to inspire, teach or enlighten. Each speaker is limited to 5 minutes, with Keynote slides (NOT Powerpoint, that was made very clear... nerds) backing them up that auto advance every 15 seconds. This keeps Ignite lively, fast paced, and interesting. Presenters are chosen by the community and event organizers.

The Ignite format is a worldwide phenomenon, but the one in Boulder is the biggest in the world. In the past, Ignite was held at Boulder Theater, but the demand for tickets pushed the event to the larger Chautauqua Auditorium. Ignite 11 began with a presentation by organizer Ef Rodriguez, who rattled off my favorite line of the night. Ef talked about his awkward high school years, pain lessened slightly by cool nicknames he would give himself to heighten his self esteem. His chosen title was "The Beekeeper," because "he gots all the honeys. "

Next was the charming Anna F. Sawyer with a presentation entitled "How to Marry the Rich." After many helpful hints such as "jogging suggestively," and "the rich have to marry someone, why not you" she finally concluded it was better to be adopted by the rich instead.
Crystal Watson and Korene Gallegos delivered "10 Selfish People Who Accidentally Changed the World for the Better." Their list included Judas, Robin Hood, Hans Christian Anderson, and your parents. They were followed by Ryan Wanger, with "10 Selfless People Who Accidentally Changed the World for the Worse." His comical but truthful list named Oppenheimer: the inventor of the atomic bomb, Hildebrand: the inventor of Autotune, and God- "lots of people have been killing each other over him for years." He suggested that everyone should be a little more selfish, because you can't love someone else before you love yourself. Aww.

Jason Cole presented "Movie Quotations You Should Never Use at Work." He explained that context is everything, and why you wouldn't use Hans Solo's line "laugh it up, fuzzball" to a bald guy. Basically, you don't want to have to explain yourself to HR, he said. Jason was followed by the amazing presentation by Ceci Ervin and "My Polish Catheter, a Tireless Search for a Cure for MS." She told us about her struggles with multiple sclerosis and the moment her life changed when she discovered an Italian doctor by the name of Zamboni. He believes that MS is not an auto-immune disorder, but a vascular disease he treats with his "Liberation Treatment." Funded through a friend who won a Joe Cocker giveaway, Ceci flew to Poland for the treatment. She reports now that she has increased feeling in her legs and and feet.

Other speakers at the event included Jim Macay with "Ageism Among Geeks," Josh Frasier, who suggested that there is an unexplainable separation between things we are scared of and things that are dangerous (Stairs- 210640 deaths each year, public speaking- 0), and Larkin Carey, who enthused the crowd with a game of Never Have I Ever. Kristina Wang and Ryan Schilt presented about visiting all counties in Colorado in 10 days, encouraging us to leave the "bubble." Cindy O'Keffe explained the benefits of grumpy enthusiasm, and Josh Mishell encouraged us to "Be Your Own Guitar Hero," and learn to play a real instrument. Zach Shapiro suggested we learn better when paired with people who are smarter than us, while Spike Ilaqua explained life according to Calvin and Hobbs. Justin Crowe ended the night with a rousing presentation entitled "High Fives and Livin' on a Prayer," and encouraged us to give more high fives, supplementing with a education how-to slide.

Bon Jovi and Twitter (of course) were common threads throughout Ignite 11, oddly enough. Everyone was all smiles as they slowly trickled out of the Auditorium into the warm summer night. Smacking hands from high fives could be heard across the lawn as people made their way home with a little more fire in their hearts.

Downtown Boulder “out peeps” Peeps (and other major news of the world)

Anyone see the front page of the Camera today? Downtown Boulder dominated the lead headline. We even “out peeped” the Peeps trial coverage. We knew the story was coming since late Tuesday afternoon. Our biggest blunder…we should have blogged about this yesterday. Instead, we let the Camera tell the story and waited in anticipation of some negative coverage. In today’s world of Social Media, shoulda/woulda/coulda just doesn’t cut it. Trust us…lesson learned! (I had this social media epiphany last night when I asked myself, “What would Andrew Hyde do?”)

BoulderDowntown.com utilizes Citylight (proprietary) software developed by Geocentric (based out of Bethesda, MD). The software is designed specifically for Destination Districts such as Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), Business Improvements Associations (BIAs), Convention and Visitor Bureaus (CVBs), and Economic Development Agencies. The software was not developed specifically for Downtown Boulder but for similar destinations throughout the country who have the same basic requirements. The developer has an incredible understanding and knowledge of how BIDs work and the unique needs we have in promoting a variety of businesses & events.

Right now, Geocentric has no competing software providers who offer all the various features of Citylight. If Downtown Boulder had the option to use a local company who produced similar software that was specifically developed for the needs of BIDs, we would. If that option one day becomes available, we will. (Additionally, the photos on our web site and those used for our collateral materials are supplied by a variety of local photographers and all graphic design happens locally as well. We maintain site updates, event & business listings from right here in our office. )

Do we “Love the Local”? Absolutely. Will we continue to encourage all of you to do the same? Absolutely! Can we take a minute to appreciate how great the Ralphie's Blast logo is?

America's favorite holiday is rapidly approaching, and it's time to make plans to show a little patriotism towards the great US of A. Not to be a cheerleader, I know this country has its share of problems, but we do have a habit of focusing on the bad parts. Every time we mess up, critics come out of the woodwork. But this Independence Day, let's set aside the negative and just focus on the good. And we are good, really good. The US donates more to charity every year than any other country in the world. As of 2006, we accept more immigrants as citizens than all other countries in the world combined. In the past 70 years, over 80 Americans have won the Nobel Prize in Medicine. We have a 1st amendment that protects almost everyone, so people can live and do and say whatever they please. Over 1/2 of all Americans volunteer every year. We are known for our overwhelming compassion when a crisis situation occurs that is unmatched by any other nation. AND we just pulled through when it matters most- scoring a goal against Algeria in the World Cup, securing a place in the next round and winning our group for the first time since 1930. We must be pretty awesome.

The city of Boulder is showing its spirit by hosting many events on America's birthday. There is, of course, the annual Ralphie's Independence Day Blast on Folsom Field. Live music, entertainment, and a community sing along will be going down on CU's campus, followed by a fireworks show. There is free parking at the 29th St Mall and Downtown parking garages, and free Hop rides up to the event. The event is free as well and gates open at 8 pm.
Earlier in the day, Parenting Place hosts a 4th of July Kid's Parade on the Boulder Municipal Building from 10 am- 12pm. Decorating strollers, wagons, trikes and bikes is highly encouraged. There will be music by Sue Schnitzer, and snacks of bagels and watermelon.

Its always fun to host a barbecue on the 4th, but if you want to leave the meat-cookin' to someone else, there are options from some favorite Boulder restaurants. Centro is hosting a lobster bake, and West End is offering market-style smoked meat platters for small and large groups. As more restaurants release plans, we will post them on our website .

Whether you are celebrating at home or out, take a minute to appreciate where you live. After all, the US is home to the People's Republic of Boulder, the best city in the world, so how bad could it be? On July 5th you can go back to talkin' smack, but next Sunday don a little red, white, and blue, and praise the lord you aren't Algerian.

Man vs. West End's Wings

Travel Channel's reality show, Man vs. Food, airs its season premier this Wed, June 16th, and guess what? The episode will be taking place at Boulder's West End Tavern! Host Adam Richman will explore the food of Boulder before heading to West End to try his stomach on their preexisting Wing King Challenge. With current stats of 24-14 in all of the food challenges he has taken, it seems that the odds are with him as he attempts to consume 50 wings in 30 minutes. However, over 80 people have attempted the Wing King Challenge, and only 14 have succeeded in the task.

The West End will be hosting a watch party starting at 6 pm to see if the ambitious foodie will be crowned victorious. Inspired specials for the event include a Mini Wing King Challenge (6 wings in 1 minute to win 18 free wings), Rib Wings, Buffalo Shrimp, Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and Salad, The Wing-Tini, tomato vodka, cucumber, hot sauce, salt & pepper rim, Buffalo Bloody, house infused vodka, wing sauce, garnished with a chicken wing, and Red Hot Beer.

Man vs. Food has always held me in a sort of grossed-out trance that I can't look away from. Curious to learn more about the host and find out if he has real estate in the cardiac center of his local hospital, I consulted my favorite source, Wikipedia. It turns out, the host has quite a routine to make sure his arteries escape semi-unscathed from challenges. He exercises twice a day when on the road, and when he can, doesn't eat the day before a show (healthy?). After filming for a challenge, Richman spends an hour on a treadmill. At least he's doing something.

Make yourself feel good about your eating habits by tuning in to the Travel Channel at 7:30 pm and see your favorite town on national television. Or better yet, visit the West End and take your own Mini Wing King Challenge and see how you measure up to the Man.

In Case of Flooding...

Ah, Boulder Creek: the source of so much pleasure for residents of Boulder. Whether you like to tube down her rapids, flip off the rope swing, or just sit by her banks listening to the water and plucking your banjo in typical Boulder style, the creek supplies our quasi-desert environment with much needed H2o interaction.

Every spring though, she gets a little too rambunctious. As the mercury pushes 80 those first weeks of June, the creek becomes voluminous, filled to the brim, causing even the most daring tuber to eye the rapids warily. This year has proved to be particularly troublesome. Warmer than average temperatures in Boulder last week excelerated snow melt causing officials to declare a flood advisory that is still in effect today, Friday, until 1:15 pm. The creek remains closed. A bridge providing access to Red Lion Restaurant was washed out threatening the business. Hopefully, we won't get those thunderstorms that are expected to roll through this afternoon, which could certainly rile up the creek even more.

Did you know that Boulder is the #1 flash flood risk in Colorado, and one can occur in less than 45 minutes? This is partly due to the position of Boulder at the mouth of the creek and also the amount of residents that live in the floodplain. Only 3 inches of rain over a few hours is enough to trigger an 100 year flood. It is important to know if you live or work in a floodplain especially in a time like this, so you can be prepared to evacuate if needed.

If you get confused, signs along the creek offer this ingenious advice: "In case of flooding, climb to saftey." Seriously? I really hope I never come close enough to the creek when it is flooding that I actually need to physically climb to dry land. But really, flooding is serious business, and call yourself lucky if you've never had to deal with one personally.

Growing up in the Ohio River Valley, and specifically right across the street from the Ohio River, I've got my fair share of flood experiences. Pretty much every year growing up, we had a flood come spring. The creek behind my house would fill up, over flow, and meet with the full Ohio River a mere 100 yards away and force all the residents in our area to rely on boat as transportation for at least the next week. All of the houses on my street were on stilts, so our living spaces remained dry at least, but I can recall many a 5 a.m. soggy cruise down Riverside Drive via rowboat until we reached our car, parked on a nearby hill. Our rowboat would wait faithfully at the flood's edge until we returned in the afternoon. One particularly vivid year, the flood waters rose unceremoniously fast, and showed no signs of stopping below the first floor of our house, which was already a good 20 feet off the ground. At the time, we had about 5 cats, a few dogs, 2 parrots, some rabbits, guinea pigs, and probably a hermit crab or two. We needed to evacuate, and as an 8-year-old overly passionate and dramatic animal freak, there was no way I was leaving any of my beloved pets behind. With the help of friends, we proceeded to cage the uncaged and lower them by pulley system into a waiting boat. All of our pets and us made it to safety that year, but by the next we were living in a new house 20 miles inland. The river had finally wore us out.

Although I hear that in 1894, Boulder Creek overtook Canyon Blvd. all the way to the Hill, mentions of flash flooding in Boulder seems pretty tame to me. Maybe those signs along the creek should be relocated to the banks of the Ohio, where they would read, "In case of flooding, row your pets to safety." Now there would be some advice you could use.

Boulder May Be A Long Way From South Africa...

... but that doesn't matter to many downtown businesses in Boulder. Many local favorites are bringing the party to the Pearl St area throughout the tournament and encouraging fans to come down by offering food and drink specials.

The West End Tavern opens its doors at 7:45 am on select days and will be offering a beer and cocktail special for each game. The best part? A build-your-own bloody mary bar so you can stuff your drink will all the celery, pickles, and any other fixings you'd like. Other specials? Kentucky Coffee, Wisconsin Lunch Box (which, after further investigation, consists of beer, orange juice, and amaretto taken as a shooter...), and Basilini's. Breakfast burritos and omelets will also be served.

Make it a block party, and wonder down to Centro to catch a few games. Admist screams of "FUTBOL" you'll get to enjoy $2 dollar tacos (I'm a vegetarian, but I hear the duck tacos are simply amazing), $2 Tecate cans, $2 Cuba Libre, and other happy hour specials.

Tread north a few blocks, and hit Italian joint Amante Coffee, who will be opening at their normal 5:45am to televise the games. Italy plays first on Monday the 14th, but Amante will be offering beer and sandwich specials throughout the World Cup as well as 1/2 off wines, $3.50 pints of Moretti, along with other drinks. The coffee shop will also have the tournament brackets posted on the walls so fans can keep track of match outcomes and take note of times for future games. Amante will be playing reruns during down times, so make sure to stop in and catch up if you got too drunk off all the fabulous specials going on and missed last nights game.

If you got too drunk, chances are you were at Conor O'Neils, a personal favorite of my friends and I, who will be bringing some Irish flair to your World Cup celebrations. Even though Ireland didn't make it to the Cup this year, that won't stop the party over at Conor's. They will be opening early for the 8am games, and will be serving authentic meat pies for the USA/England game on Saturday.

A little bit further down the mall is The Lazy Dog, which is sure to be a prime spot to watch all games. With over 40 screens around the restaurant, an 8 am opening, plus specials, you very well could post up here all day and have enough room to bring everyone you know.

As a new intern at DBI, I was really excited to explore all these specials going on. I'm not the biggest soccer fan in the world, but I love seeing all the culture that the World Cup brings to the US. I also get excited just when people say World Cup, because it reminds me of the Quidditch World Cup, and come on, who doesn't love Harry Potter? Please don't comment and say you don't, because I will write back until you are convinced that Harry is God.

...Anyway, my name is Gage and I'm a recent grad of CU originally from Kentucky. Along with really loving Harry Potter, I love my dog Sunday exponentially more, and if you're lucky, you'll hear more about Sunday as my internship progresses here at DBI.

Delivering Happiness to Downtown Boulder

As a follow up to my May 25 post, Zappos & Downtown Boulder in the same sentence?, I am writing a review of Tony Hsieh’s Delivering Happiness on the official day of his book launch. I jumped at the chance to receive a free advance copy of the book because the same entrepreneurial spirit that runs through Hsieh can be found throughout Downtown Boulder.

Delivering Happiness provides the makings of a road map to personal success - simply by finding your own happiness. Sounds easy enough right? For Hsieh, finding happiness came as a result of gigantic leaps of faith, risk taking, a lot of hard work, reflecting inward and just a little bit of luck (well, not to mention surrounding himself with people of similar interests, passions and goals).

No matter what stage you are in your professional or personal life, Hsieh provides some great insight in finding your way. His writing style is laid back and friendly. He takes readers on a journey through his experience over the past decade or so. He’s open and honest about his thoughts and emotions. Hsieh puts the secrets to Zappo’s success right out there for everyone to see.

In the final section of the book, Hsieh engages readers to start the internal process of figuring out for ourselves what our goal is in life and illustrates that in the end of our personal search, the goal for all of us is the same: we all just want to be happy. He might not have the exact answers on how each of us can get to this happy place, but he provides a good starting point and plenty of inspiration through his own journey. No matter who you are or what industry you are in Delivering Happiness is a pretty darn good summer read.

Bringing this topic back around to Downtown Boulder, I feel like I’m surrounded by people who have found their own happiness. From the retailers who work seven days a week and the passionate restaurateurs who have made our downtown a foodie’s paradise, to the talented, creative and energetic second story businesses, Downtown Boulder is full of people with a similar passions and goals. The Republic of Big Ideas and Little Egos

Ever since I moved to Boulder I haven't been able to escape commentary about "living in the bubble," and "the Republic of Boulder." Sometimes it's said with a smirk, like it's supposed to be an insult--talking smack about how Boulder is too small, or on its own planet. But I happen to like living in the bubble. In fact, I LOVE IT and fine, maybe I will marry it. Because here's the thing: I actually like running into people I know around every corner.

First of all, I like having friends. Weird, right? I mean, who likes to be surrounded by people who care about them and smile often and engage them in warm conversation? I can go have a cappuccino at The Cup and say hi to Thai, and then have some delicious gelato at Two Spoons and watch for people I know walking by at lunch. I can sit by the creek and pick up some extra motivation to go running before I decline and catch an impromptu happy hour at The Westend instead. Not a bad life, eh?

Second, there is more of a close-knit camaraderie that can be established in a smaller community. It's easier to get things done, make big things happen, and share knowledge and experience for the good of the people. People are far more likely to help out their neighborhood so-and-so who remembers their name than Joe Schmoe harassing them on the street. And big things do happen in Boulder--awards for culinary success, tech studs (and studettes), amazing road races, free conferences, killer film festivals, examples in eco-sustainability, to name a few.

The Flatirons are not the reason our little bubble ends up on the top of so many Best Of lists, the people are. We are the Republic of Easy-Going Eccentricity, of Microbrews and Macro Views, of the Greener Side of the Fence. It's easy getting into the bubble; it's the leaving that's the hard part.

Battle of the Ducks and Dr. Oz

Memorial Day weekend is possibly my most favorite 96 hours of the entire year. Besides my birthday (which technically lasts a whole week). But I digress: This weekend is comprised of the Boulder Creek Fest, the BolderBoulder, a national holiday and it's almost always the true beginning of summer weather.

Let's talk about the Creek Fest. And Rubber Ducks--Ernie knows what's up: rubber duckies make for great companions. But he has never seen anything like the Great Rubber Duck Race. Picture hundreds of fearless ducks, plunged into freezing cold, unforgiving rapids, fighting for the ultimate dream: to be crowned the fastest rubber ducky in Boulder (and maybe even Lafayette and Longmont). And bonus points for sponsoring your little dude to support EXPAND, which provides recreational activities for people with disabilities. If you're interested, join the masses on Sunday at 4 p.m.

Speaking of joining the masses (and Dr. Oz--but no Oprah??), who's gonna run the BolderBoulder with me? This is going to be my fourth year and I just can't get enough. Normally I don't get cheered on by thousands of onlookers and serenaded by local bands when I go for runs, so it's a pretty exhilarating experience. But the best part is the commemorative ceremony afterward to celebrate the country's bravest. I never expected to be so overwhelmed by a show of national pride. First of all, because I'm Canadian, so I'm more into Canadian pride. And second of all, because I don't get sentimental or mushy. I don't even cry during Grey's Anatomy. However, the BolderBoulder's version of Memorial Day strikes me as so real and unpretentious and healthy I can't help but get a little teary-eyed every year.

So if you're around this weekend, head downtown to shop and eat at the Creek Fest, float a ducky or two, and honor a few good men at the BolderBoulder.

Zappos & Downtown Boulder in the same sentence?

I'm reading a book...an actual book printed on actual paper. I'm turning pages and folding down corners. I might even pull out a highlighter to remember key phrases/quotes! It's kind of fun. No Kindal, iPad or Nook in sight.

So what's the book? It's an advance copy of Tony Hsieh's (pronounced 'Shay') Delivering Happiness - A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose. If you have never heard of Tony, you are sure to have heard of his company, Zappos.com. One day while surfing Mashable.com (a great resource for everything social media), I found an opportunity to receive a free advanced copy of the book. In return, all I had to do was promise to write an honest review the day of its release (June 7).

The reason I jumped at this chance is because from what I've read about Hsieh he's an extremely clever businessman and a very passionate person. He has embraced social media (specifically Twitter with 1,686,677 followers to date, just hair more then we have...) as an active participant - as the voice of Zappos... the human voice of Zappos. If he has some lessons on how to be successful in business and happy in life, I'm all ears! Over the next several days, I'll give you a sneak peek into the book and share some of his thoughts/wisdom.

So how does this all relate to Downtown Boulder? Because much like Hsieh, there is a never- ending-list of successful business people right here in our 49 block district with the same level of drive and passion. Just like Hsieh, they are doing what they love and they are really good at it. Just like Hsieh, they must be doing something right! Need some examples? This Isn't Goodbye...

Today is my last day interning at Downtown Boulder, Inc, but I'm not going to write a sappy "last day" blog because I've basically forced Eli and Terri to let me keep blogging for them. So dry your tears, Mom, you can still follow my words of wisdom.

I think I made it pretty clear in my St. Patrick's Day post that I am all for early morning drinking. So naturally, when I heard that West End is opening early for select World Cup games next month, I was in. Except for...the soccer part. Hopefully what I'm about to tell you won't sour your affections towards me, but...

I don't like soccer. Seriously. I like almost every other sport (even golf), but I just can't get on board with the foosball. Maybe it's spurred by yet another deficiency in my youth (my coach used to say, "Ok, just stand by the goal and if the ball comes near you, kick it really hard"), or that I knew way too much about the soccer players on my high school's team. Or that I am Canadian. Or that I watched my ex-boyfriend play hours of FIFA instead of taking me out to dinner. In any case, I just can't stand it! One time, I said so to a guy I was dating and never heard from him again; the only obvious/possible reason for that, being that I didn't appreciate his national sport.

Luckily, The West End Tavern has plenty of other offerings to distract me, like booze. There will be Kentucky Coffee (read: Bourbon), a Do-It-Yourself Bloody Mary Bar, Wisconsin Lunch Box's, and a daily cocktail and beer special. On top of that, breakfast burritos and an omelet-of-the-day to start the day off right.

So I'm going to go to WET to be one of those girls I hate at baseball games: the ones who don't pay any attention to the actual sport; they're just there to socialize and drink. But that's actually a good thing, because I happen to be a pretty feisty sports fan--I've almost been kicked out of rec softball games before. So believe me; tame, clueless Stacy is much better than unruly, game-following Stacy.

Roots of Notion: A Pedestrian Mall is Born.

So I'm back from a week in the Northern California sun, with vague reports of it snowing here while I was gone. Bummer, I thought, sipping wine in 75 degree heat in the beautiful Anderson Valley as the weather app showed snowflakes back in Boulder. So yeah, Cali was nice: verdant, sunny, relaxing: got more hugs in a three-block radius back in Southern Humboldt than a month here. Yes, I grew up in Humboldt (insert weed joke here) and don't get home too often. But it was one particular block in my one-horse, no stoplight town where I grew up that brought to mind our own lovely downtown. My dad is a community organizer and activist back home, and almost a decade ago he and some other locals embarked on a plan to create a town square on square block of what was a gravel-ridden parking lot in the middle of town.

Strange how we find ourselves doing similar things I thought, as I walked through the dozen charming farmers' stalls that lined a block of pitted pavement. But there it was, a decade after they had dreamed it, starting to take shape and become a center for the community. Couples were enjoying coffee at cafe tables under newly planted trees. An accordion and guitar played gypsy tunes and the square was humming with vibrancy. They had raised hundred of thousands of dollars, replaced the rocky ground with landscaping, trees, different levels, and provided a meeting place. They had a sign on a small booth off to the side that was selling popcorn and showed what their vision of the place was. It is slowly marching towards a complete reality. People stopped my father with advice, thank you's, and the like. They asked what I did and I had to smile and said I helped take care of a similar thing in the Rockies, a little larger perhaps, but basically the same.

It took years to get that town square underway even in a small town, and still they have to fight every week with the county to close the road for the farmers' market, to argue with the businesses who want more parking, and figure ways to keep the homeless from spending all their time lounging on the new benches with their dogs. Issues I have become accustomed to working here in same arena, only with few more blocks to take care of. They dream of a pop-jet fountain even if it costs more then they will ever have, but they keep at it. One step at a time, trying to create that vision of a central gathering place carved out of the scraggly NorCal hills.

It made me appreciate the unique and wonderful partnerships that make our downtown work so well. And what a gem it is to have the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder; a place where people can gather and exchange ideas, stop for a cup of coffee and a hot dog, play music or hold a their festivals. That inviting atmosphere and the commonality of having such a transcendent place be the heart of a town is not only rare but to be cherished and nurtured. Back in California, as I stepped back to snap a picture of it all, I realized in that little way that makes your heart glow just a bit, that there it was, taking shape right before my eyes again, miles away. Who knows what it will become, but I look forward to seeing more of it, as they look to us and our successes. I look forward to getting more hugs, and sipping my own coffee under its towering trees someday.

Wanna Play Four Square?

When @andrewhyde mentioned foursquare at DBI's Social Media panel last month, I shuddered. The words "four square" conjure up dark memories of adolescent athletic inadequacies. Always chosen last, never made it to the fourth square, rubber burn on my face from an overzealous, early-blooming fourth-grader and his mammoth serve. Goosebumps all over.

And now this is the latest trend? Proclaiming your location so that you can become mayor at the risk of your house being robbed, shrouded by illusions of elementary school anguish? Ei yi yi.

Alas, wanting to always stay at the forefront (or at least keep it in view), I gave it a try anyway. This morning, I added DBI as a venue to foursquare and am currently seeking friends. Hint, hint.

I am starting to see the perks. Contest ideas abound, and this is potentially a great way to collaborate with the businesses downtown for your benefit. Plus, there are no crazy rules like "same as last time." Come on, like I'm supposed to remember the overly-amended register of customized "moves." I'm concentrating too hard on not peeing my pants out of fear.

But in all seriousness, do you want to play foursquare? Keep an eye out for our use to increase, and we would appreciate any ideas, tips, comments, etc.

2,567 Faces on the wall, 2,567 Faces...!

Eli: your desk has now become storage for auxiliary bagels. ;)

Do you ever feel like you're getting lost in the crowd? Boulder is getting bigger and bigger every day and it's becoming harder to stand out from the masses. But local photographer Peggy Dyer is giving people the opportunity to be one in a million with her project One Million Faces. Peggy's goal is to photograph one million faces and donate proceeds to charities in the process. Last count was 2,567 faces in 61 days, which translates to a pace of about 15, 360 faces per year. She has visited businesses and events all over Downtown Boulder and snapped the willing at Whole Foods, Om Time, and more.

Definitely check out Peggy's work, she has a great eye for capturing candid moments and I'm sure she would love more volunteers to host events for her. She is currently supporting several charities: the Davis Phinney Foundation, the Chanda Plan, Shjon Podein's Children's Foundation, MESA, and others.

Mugging for a cause can't get any better!

If You Give An Intern A Cookie...

...she's going to try to take over your job. At least, that's what's happening at the DBI office this week. Eli--my boss--is in a whole other state for a few days and he gave me the reins and you better believe I'm running with them! I have a dozen windows open on the internet (work related, I promise), full access to the blog and Tweetdeck and the oldies channel playing on Pandora...yeah, life is good.

I'm settling into "life as Eli" reasonably well...

1. Witty and sardonic twitter-tude? Check.
2. Knowledge of passwords? Check.
3. General IT knowledge? Almost check.
4. Extremely intelligent, humorous, entertaining, good-looking intern sidekick? Uh...wait a minute! Who's gonna be my intern sidekick??

Unfortunate lack of sidekick aside, I have a feeling this is going to be a very successful week. Stay tuned for my random musings about keeping busy and the cool happenins' in Downtown Boulder. Oh, and for my Top Secret Intern Project. It's gonna be big.

"I probably sound like I'm drooling"

Ignite Boulder was SO COOL. I feel like a preteen that snuck into a rock concert and then got someone to buy me a few beers too!! I'm on a high and I don't wanna come down, and I'm not gonna lie: if you weren't there last night, sucks for you. Seriously, I feel bad for you ;) If you haven't heard of Ignite Boulder, or you're a virgin like I was, picture fourteen energetic speakers with a powerpoint presentation, limited time frame, and various knowledge to share--fast paced, hilarious, and in some cases, very humbling. I'm hooked (obviously...I probably sound like I'm drooling). This is a great event folks, put June 24th on the calendar for Ignite 11.

And what an eclectic mix of intelligent, fun people (shout-out to @tarable)! If you haven't had a chance yet, you should rush out and catch the last two days of Boulder Startup Week and meet some of these geeks for yourself. But watch out, you might find yourself inspired!

Stay tuned next week when I take over the DBI front office and begin my silent coup for Eli's job while he's on vacation.

Alright, alright...wipe off that feigned look of surprise. But just because I can quote Star Wars and I like math doesn't mean I'm not cool. Geeks are definitely cool...actually, they're awesome, and if you look around, you'll notice that they literally run this town.

And this week, geeks around the country are taking over Boulder at the First Annual Startup Week, hosted by local tech guru Andrew Hyde. Andrew has a crush on startups and I have a crush on Andrew Hyde. If you have a crush on either, or if you've ever blogged, hacked, designed, unlocked, developed, or entrepreneur-ized, then Startup Week is the place for you. Join smarty-pants from near and far for hikes and bikes, dev sessions and deals, and beers and beans. Tag along on a startup office crawl, tweet about a blog about a social media meetup, and battle to the death for your IPad. Or PCs.

There are a myriad of helpful, fun, informative events going on through this Saturday including Ignite Boulder, on Thursday evening. A sold out event, but for those of you lucky enough to partake, I hope to see you there! (I'll be wearing purple.)

Being Green IS Easy!

When I was seven, my grandma took me to see FernGully. I have never felt so wrought with guilt as I did leaving that theater. The grievous costs of society's over-consumption literally ate me up inside, so I refused to go home until my grandma bought me a little plant of my own.

Luckily, here in Boulder I don't have to worry about mitigating unnecessary ozone and rain forest depletion. We have enough trees and vegetation to be named a "Tree City USA" for the 26th year by the National Arbor Day Foundation. (As if we didn't already hold enough titles--seriously, Boulder is like one of those girls-next-door that decides to enter a pageant just for fun and sweeps all the awards.) This is an awesome recognition and so easy to come by. If you're interested in spreading the (tree) love, The Center for ReSource Conservation has a great deal on Colorado-specific trees through their Trees Across Boulder plan. Or, Downtown Boulder, Inc. is offering free petunias to businesses in the Business Improvement District as a way to beautify!

If your kids also suffer from FernGully trauma, bring them down to Pearl Street Mall this Friday to celebrate the tulips and the coming of summer with the Tulip Fairy at the Tulip Fairy and Elf Parade. Children are encouraged to dress up as miniature fairies and elves and parade around the bricks. Following the parade is the annual Colorado Children's Day Festival with activities galore for your little ones to enjoy.

Support Downtown's effort to be green and thriving; plant a tree, plant some tulips, or come downtown with your children to instill environmental awareness at an early age!

I Heart Admin Pros

Know who doesn't get enough recognition? Your administrative assistant. He/She knows you like the back of their hand--your schedule, how you like your coffee, who you want to avoid on the phone, how to fix that pesky problem on your computer. They do all the dirty work: they're the first ones to speak with a peeved client and they run the database. They edit your poor grammar and they smile while they do it.

Thank goodness you have the opportunity to thank them! Since 1952, National Administrative Professional's Week has been a workplace observance dedicated to receptionists, office managers, staff support and personal assistants. It is celebrated the last full week of April every year and--wait, that's this week! Yikes, did you forget?! It's okay, you still have plenty of time to laud your admin professional and shower them with gifts. But how about instead of a hug or high five, this time around you give them something awesome, like a Downtown Boulder gift card! Good at 175 retailers and restaurants downtown, its the perfect way to say, "Thank you for running my office!" They can be purchased online, at our visitor center everyday between 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. or at our office in the 1942 Broadway Suites.

Eat Downtown on the Cheap

I feel like I'm constantly talking about how I'm broke and can't afford anything in this blog, so I wanted to clarify: I do have some money, I promise. But like any recent grad, it's pretty limited funding, so I can appreciate (and possibly obsess about) a good deal. And I like to pass these good deals on to you; sharing the wealth is good karma! So I went on a field trip a few days ago to scout out all the cheap lunches down here downtown.

Lunch is an important meal--it's suppose to revitalize you to get you through the remainder of your workday, but it's often overlooked and even I'm guilty of skimping and nibbling at my desk rather than running out for a quick bite. But now none of us have an excuse because I made a whole web page devoted to my findings! And these listings are meant to accommodate a speedy lunch hour, with a few sit-down opportunities sprinkled in, so you can definitely fit something in. Everything I came up with is also under FIVE BUCKS. Yeah, amazing, I know.

Tasty Pearl

All of a sudden, Boulder is this culinary hot-spot; a hub for all things yummy. Restaurants around here boast local produce and sustainable/eco practices and end up in 5280 Magazine and Westword for "Best Of this and that..." awards. Here in Downtown Boulder we have Top Chefs and master mixologists, and cuisine from all around the world! All the cool kids are talking about it, and I wanna go, too!

But let's get real, here. I'm an intern--I get paid diddly. There's no way I can afford to be as much a part of this scene as I want to. There are literally 113 places to dine in the downtown area; multiplied buy an average of $15 spent per restaurant equals at least $1695.00 I do not have, thanks to silly things like gas for my car and student loans.

I can, however, scrounge up $52.80, which will get me a pass to the Taste of Pearl next weekend. In fact, I might even be able to spring for one for my boyfriend, too!

So a Girl Goes Into a Coffee Shop, and the Barista Says...

I love coffee. I need coffee. I also love attention, and being spoiled, and that's why I go to The Cup. There are plenty of great coffee places, but The Cup has got it right in so many ways. And since they just celebrated an anniversary, I'd like to give a little testimonial and shout-out to the prettiest cappuccinos I've ever had.

I remember it like yesterday...I wandered into The Cup almost three years ago for the first time. It was freezing and I was broke from a job I was pouring my heart, soul, and wallet into. I just wanted a little pick-me-up and a place to read some Capote, so I didn't have high expectations. But that's what you get from years of Starbucks coffee, I guess. Anyway, what I found was a warm crew of baristas, a friendly atmosphere, and a heart made of milk foam atop a perfect little cappuccino. I settled into my book and felt comfortable enough to stay there for over two hours. Refreshing, rejuvenating...it was what I needed to snap out of my funk.

Then, what started as a weekly tradition turned into an almost daily occurrence, during which the staff at The Cup began to introduce themselves and remember my order for next time. Pretty soon I found myself finishing one book and starting a new one in one sitting, ordering a drink or a turkey bagel sandwich with jalapeno habanero cream cheese (yum) just to prolong my time spent there. Now I take my crocheting or a crossword along too, or stop by on my way back from the Farmers Market to sit in the sun and people watch. Always relaxing and never taxing.

To The Cup: Thank you for providing an awesome venue to just be a Boulderite! And of course, for chocolate-covered espresso beans...

This Little Piggy Went to Market

It's almost April 3rd, and do you know what that means? Time for the Farmers' Market to start back up!

For me, it's like Christmas without the post-holiday letdown, as the harvest only gets better over time...but don't let the early season fool you, the market already has plenty to offer! Check out last year's Daily Camera Crop Calendar for an idea of what to expect, but for now, think SALADS! Lettuce, hothouse tomatoes, radishes, and cucumbers, oh my! And don't forget to take home some garlic! I know that sounds odd, but homegrown garlic has the sweetest, most potent flavor, and unless you're a vampire, you gotta try it. Make a point of picking up some fresh eggs and cheese, too. Eggs + cheese + garlic = best omelet ever.

Beyond local produce, there are dozens of prepared and packaged food vendors, too. My personal favorite is Loredana's. I don't know if they've caught on to my double and triple visits yet, but I can make breakfast out of bread and marinated cheese at their stand. Read my lips: white truffle tartufo.

If you're really hungry, I have one word for you: pupusas. New to the scene last year, the pupusa stand must have handed out thousands of their cheese and meat/veggie stuffed flatbreads. Quick, hot, cheap.

As if you need another reason to go, how about for the live music? I just checked the weather for Saturday and the sun will be out--nothing better than spring sunshine, tunes, and free samples. Take your fare and enjoy it in the park, or segue into downtown for some shopping and busker action!

Downtown Boulder Man Makes Cocktail in Speeding Jet Boat

So apparently I've really messed up my spring break plans this year. I decided to stay in Boulder and "work" while I should have been in New Zealand for the 42Below Cocktail World Cup. Duh.

Yeah, I didn't know it existed either until I heard Downtown's own Bitter Bar mixologist Mark Stoddard is on Team USA. Foiled again! So I did some research and while I can't glean much about the challenge specifics, from the pics on Facebook I can only assume that it is a collection of the 24 coolest people in the world mixing alcoholic beverages under extreme circumstances. There are jet boats and Irish men in strange hats, bungee-jumping excursions, passionfruit-foam topped libations and a lot of intoxicated Kiwis.

The challenges last through the 28th of March and Mark has already led his team to a victory in the "21st Century Punch" competition with "42 and Cloudy," a champagne punch served in a passionfruit. (Recipe here, if you dare.)

This isn't Mark's first time to compete and win, either...the man is a seasoned pro. He ran away with the Colorado Bartenders Guild's first prize and landed himself a place in the National Bartenders Guild competition.

So here's what I say: give the guy some support on his Twitter page and next week head over to Bitter Bar for a little sampling from our very own decorated Boulder mixologist before you can't get a reservation ever again.

Three More Days to Vote For Boulder Fiber!!!

If you haven't heard about Google Fiber yet, you're living under a rock and it really doesn't pertain to you. Otherwise, you know that Google is looking for a test city for its experimental ultra-fast broadband internet. Google is encouraging cities to vote for themselves in a race to host a trial connection. Since Boulder is already the happiest, fittest, and smartest city in America, it only seems fit that it would also be the fastest. And with estimated connection speeds of one gigabit per second, the Fiber project is darn fast.

That means you would be downloading movies, reading about the nude Boulder gardener, uploading photos and checking Facebook one hundred times faster than you are now.

Holy mackerel! But here's the deal--you have to get online and fill out a nomination form before the end of March 26th. But it's a piece of cake, I promise! Boulder Fiber Forever has laid out all the steps for interested individuals and it only takes five minutes (which is like three seconds in Google Fiber time...).

Duzer did it, so you can too! Come on kids, rally--we can't let those Highlands Ranchites beat us out; my dad would never let me hear the end of it.

Slainte! (The only Irish word you'll ever need to know)

So apparently, I'm not allowed to go drink green beer on my lunch hour today, according to my boss. I figured as a redhead, he'd be all about St Paddy's Day, but he didn't even wear green.

I love green, so I'm sitting here sulking at my desk, all dressed up with no where to go. I guess no one else in Boulder is having a similar issue because we've been getting tweets all morning asking where the action is today...

I love a holiday that inspires 9 a.m. drinking.

I'm all about giving the people what they want so I've put together a little (suggested) Downtown Boulder St Paddy's Day Pub Crawl. Here ya go folks:

The obvious first stop is Conor O'Neills. They're having live music and drink specials all day, and hey, they've been open since 8 a.m. so that's a plus. The early bird gets the guinness...

Next, head east and hit up Dish for some gourmet Irish for lunch. Corned beef and cabbage, yum!

Of course, you'll need to wash that all down with something, so next stop is Mountain Sun for their annual celebration. Brewers have created a special brew for the occasion and they need you to test it out! And if you stick around, Elephant Revival is playing all night long, starting at 10 p.m.

Next stop, dessert. Grab a Green Beer or Car Bomb flavored cupcake from Tee and Cakes. Um, delicious!!

From there, you can skip over to the Hotel Boulderado at 5 p.m. for live music and Irish fare on the mezzanine. Yes, there will be riverdancing.

All that jigging is surely going to make you thirsty, so pop on down to the Rib House by 6 p.m. for a free tap beer if you're wearing green. Live music from Jeff Brinkman till 9 p.m.

Next up, the West End Tavern for some awesome drink specials, like Car Bomb Slushies and $3 Black and Velvets. Lots of food items for snacking on, too, so you can refuel for the rest of the night.

I assume by this time, you're getting a little tired, so swing back towards the Boulder Theater to sit down for a 8 p.m. showing of The Big Lebowski. Wear a robe for a dollar off a White Russian. Wear a green robe if you're really in the spirit.

Now that you've had time to rejuvenate it's time to throwdown...at the Draft House St Paddy's Day Throwdown. Drink and food specials all night and live music!

And if you think you can handle it, finish off your night at Conor's for one last car bomb. Or two.

Additional hot spots include Q's for lunch and drink specials, The Blending Cellar for ladies night and a jewelry trunk show and the St. Julien for more live music.

Victory for me, spoils for you

Just call me a 'Master Infiltrator.' I made it to the inner circle of Victors and Spoils and spoke with one of the men in charge; Evan Fry. It was a tough process, but I finally was able to reach Mr. Fry through his email...tricky tricky.

I entered into the VnS grotto on Monday and was greeted by a beautiful golden retriever that I can only assume was a decoy, but thanks to my quick-thinking, I bypassed this security threat with a disarming show of affection. I reached Evan and briefed him on my mission, to which he complied with a very informative interview. Even as I threw out the hard questions, Evan was able to deliver, much to my surprise.

He described VnS as a sleek, six-person team working to spread the wonders and benefits of crowd-sourcing. Crowd-sourcing, Evan informed me, is "...a buzz word that's been bubbling around for a few years," and is a means of utilizing a specific audience to define a brand. Spurred by the current economy, it fills a gap that allows them to find "...new ways of making things more efficient." Evan welcomes newcomers to "The Crowd," which is not a cult, as I first suspected, but rather a group of copywriters, artists, designers, etc. that form said "audience." The peeps at VnS throw out a project to "The Crowd", hold a vote for the best results, and to the victors belong the spoils. Check out the joining process on their website.

Evan informed me that the mysterious gallery is home to the work of Mark Castator, a sculptor who works with various metals. My personal favorite work of Mark's is "Vincent's Dream."

He also claims that VnS has a sign ready to go up out front, but that the acts of confusion and randomness induced by their anonymity have been more interesting and entertaining than they anticipated.

I concluded the interview with a question to Evan regarding what VnS would bring to Downtown Boulder, hoping to put him on the spot a bit. He answered, "Intrigue."

Touche, Mr. Fry, touche.

Flip-Flops No More!

The minute I set foot in my freshman year dorm room seven years ago, I abandoned any and all fashion sense I had cultivated throughout high school. I went from heels to flip-flops and skirts to jeans paired with old race t-shirts. I rarely blew out my hair and ran to catch my bus every morning after only a quick application of mascara and a swipe of chapstick. Now that I've graduated and am looking for a big-girl job, I've obviously had to make some changes in my appearance but it has been a weary transition. I'm stuck in a fashion rut--or more accurately, a fashion "Gap". My entire wardrobe consists of Gap pairings, and while I feel comfortable--bordering on stylish--in my outfits, the time has certainly come for me to add a little zip! to my daily efforts.

And am I ever in luck! The first Fashion Under the Flatirons is right under my nose. This Thursday, March 11, around 25 to thirty local vendors will showcase their goods at the Boulder Theater for my (and your) approval. And to boot, all guests will receive a little hot pink 20% discount card to use the following three days at participating Downtown Boulder shops.

If you're like me and your familiarity with businesses in Downtown Boulder borders on stalker-ish, then you've already noticed the 'new building'. If not, let me enlighten you: it's the one hidden in the former Mountain Sports space; painted black and shrouded in mystery. No name or distinguishing features, tinted windows...

This morning, my curiosity got the best of me. And, apparently, so did my desire to be a spy. So I grabbed the ol' point-and-shoot and snuck on down to Pearl and 8th. I tried to be casual at first--breezily walking by the enigmatic outfit, yearning to catch a glimpse of the inside. But everyone knows that casual never works. This was going to call for guerrilla tactics.

My next move was to wait behind a tree across the street and snap some telltale photos. Equipped with a large winter coat and bulky purse, though lacking a telephoto, it was difficult to completely conceal my intentions, but luckily there are enough...um, colorful...personalities in Boulder that I was able to blend in long enough for a few identifying shots. Fortunately, I am immune to looks of bewilderment from passersby.

Before creeping back to the office to review my evidence, I made one last pass by the building's facade to take a closer look at a small printed sign in the window. And what's this? Another crucial tidbit! It read, "Call gallery to make appointment," and listed a phone number. I quickly scribbled down the digits and slunk away.

Back in front of my computer, I Googled the phone number in hopes of disclosing Gallery X but what I found was even more intriguing: Victors and Spoils. The sleek, streamlined website spoke of advertising and was laced with words like 'crowdsourcing' and 'co-creation'. Post-wikipedia, I learned that these are indeed, real words. But despite all this new information, I fear that I have only fallen more deeply into the tangled web. What is this gallery? What really goes on at V&S? Or is it just some elaborate cover-up?

Downtown Boulder Launches Mobile Web Site

We just launched our mobile site today (http://m.boulderdowntown.com)! When we decided to move forward on this project in late fall, it was a no brainer...of course Downtown Boulder needs a mobile Web site! Funny how fast my opinion shifted from a little over a year ago.

When the idea was first presented to me (in late 2008), I was still using my hot pink Razor phone (don't ask). I balked at the idea of spending money to have a mobile site created thinking that consumers (aka me, myself and I) were years away from utilizing that type of technology. By April 2009, our marketing strategy began embracing the social media craze and after successfully launching and maintaining very active Facebook and Twitter accounts and relaunching BoulderDowntown.com, it became crystal clear that the next avenue to pursue was mobile marketing!

While Downtown Boulder is not the very first business improvement district to launch a mobile site (completely my fault), we are still among the few who have done one to date (thank you Geocentric)! After meeting with several techies, we decided to pursue the mobile site route rather than the iPhone app route for two reasons...one, to be inclusive for virtually any web-enabled cell phone, smartphone or other mobile Internet device and two, money (enough said)!

Here are some of our cool features (directly from our press release): mobile visitors can quickly and easily search for events and business listings, as well as maps and directions through this location-based site. Mobile users tend to be action oriented (“I’m looking for XYZ right now”) and their queries often contain a strong geographic context (“How do I get to XYZ from where I’m at?”) Downtown Boulder's mobile Web application will automatically locate users on iPhones, current Blackberry, Android and other GPS enabled smartphones. Other mobile users can set their location by selecting a nearby business or street intersection.

BTW, I traded in the hot pink Razor for Blackberry late last year...it is, however, a light pink one!

Santa Prepares for Epic Journey

Tomorrow, Saturday, December 19th Santa will be leaving Boulder in preparation for his annual journey around the world. For near a month, Santa has held court on Downtown Boulder's Pearl Street every Saturday. This week he will be wrapping up his list and taking the last of his pictures with kids from Boulder.

Santa made his first appearances in Boulder on at Switch on Holidays on November 28, mingling with admirers of all ages. Santa also was the star of Downtown Boulder's Lights of December Parade on December 5th (see the video here).

After tomorrow, watch for Santa to come back the evening of December 24th on NORAD's Santa Tracker. In the interim Santa will undoubtedly be hurried to tally the naughty and nice and make final preparations to his sleigh. So come on down to bricks tomorrow to catch the jolly old fellow before he's gone!

National Cupcake Day

National Cupcake Day is tomorrow and a way better idea than turning off the lights at lunch (no offense Xcel, great strategy). As if you needed an excuse to go grab a cupcake.

Perhaps that is what started the cupcake trend, just a little bit of decadence. Admit it, even those Safeway cakes are tempting. Yet, I never had the nerve to ask for a sheet cake emblazoned with "Happy Tuesday Night Ian." I never have a problem walking into Tee and Cakes and asking for a half dozen cupcakes. I can even pretend they are for friends, coworkers or some other extravagance.

You can't do that with a cake, you need people to share a cake with. National Cupcake day is the great social equalizer. But in honor of the occasion I think I may actually get a real cake, wishing me and all my friends a Happy National Cupcake Day.

Lights Out Boulder

Less than an hour until Lights Out Lunch. Restaurants use five times the energy than other commercial buildings, and turning off the lights makes a pretty poignant statement.If it's discounts you're looking for, then head over to any of Boulder's participating restaurants. Pledge to do your part to save energy this winter and get hooked up.

I question why we don't turn the lights off from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. when the crowd is sparse anyways, or just head down to the Sundowner, it's always dark down there. In fact, why not just close up the office in an hour and save all sorts of energy. I was always a huge fan of early weekends in Boulder.

If you want to save some of your own energy the The Governor's office and Xcel energy is also still sponsoring $1 compact fluorescent lights. Even if you're not a broke student, winter energy bills still pile up and it's never too late to save some cash.

This isn't the first snowy Friday I've been looking forward to this year. However, it is the first Friday with the star up on Flagstaff, snow on the ground and a reason bigger than myself to go shopping.

With only a semesters worth of work to do on Saturday, an excuse to wander Pearl, coffee in hand, with Holiday lights abounding, could be tempting enough. Santa Claus is coming to the bricks

This Saturday (Nov. 21) grab your family, winter scarves, mittens and hats and join Downtown Boulder as we Switch on the Holidays at 5 p.m. in front of the Boulder County Courthouse (1300 block of Pearl Street). With a little help from Face (all vocal rock group) and Santa himself, we will fill you with a lot of holiday cheer!

When Santa flips the switch, over 35,000 LED lights will brighten up the trees along the bricks and holiday lighting will illuminate the county courthouse and star on Flagstaff Mountain. Immediately thereafter, follow Tweedles the Elf over to the Ice Rink at One Boulder Plaza for Light Up the Ice - an ice show featuring local skating stars. Tweedles will delight you with her magic and there will also be face painting and balloon creations for all to enjoy.

Santa will be around for a few minutes to greet kids big and small but if you don't have a chance to chat with him, come back down for St. Nick on the Bricks (Nov. 27 and Saturdays from Nov. 28 - Dec. 19) from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Visitor Information Center (1301 Pearl St.)

Make a day of it! Come up early and peruse close to 200 retailers and over 100 dining establishments. Remember on Saturdays and Sundays (year round) parking is always free in the City of Boulder Parking Garages. Hope to see you in the heart of the city this holiday season!

Stay in Boulder long enough and you’ll inevitably find a startup that piques your interest. User generated content is the backbone of social media; from Yelp reviews, to Four Square early adopters are beyond uploading information and on to uploading places. PublicEarth is a mapping tool for user generated content. As an urban planning student Google Earth is great; however PublicEarth works more like a professional GIS (Geographic Information System) tool, yet makes it feel even simpler.

PublicEarth makes adding points, lines and shapes as easy as drawing on a napkin. With shapes and lines, we can add routes, areas of a park or your best friend’s backyard. PublicEarth has teamed with Public Art Review and will to map public art around the world. They've also made agreements to offer full mountain bike ride reports. However, the backbone is users and adding what is important to you.

Public Earth is fully launched & live and free and available to the public. Anyone with Internet access is able to use the site! The commercial value is obvious, come to my restaurant, club or store! Yet allowing users to add regions to maps we could potentially see more of our open spaces reviewed in detail. And with trails and routes, imagine what could be added to our biking or pedestrian network around town.

What do you mean you don’t ride down Walnut and you take the back alley, or you use that path because it cuts through a community garden? I will be watching this site, looking to share it with planners around town and hoping it generates some attention.

Who knows what data will really be valuable, but surely much of it is. Now if all this data just existed in one place…So, please don’t let it be Google, please let it be more open and keep an eye on this local site. They may just be opening up mapping to the masses.

Boulder Adventure Film Festival Opens Tonight!

On Thursday night, Boulder's Adventure Film Festival returns to town, opening at the Boulder Theater. This homegrown event is sponsored by Patagonia for its fifth year in Boulder and the tour now also features stops in Chamonix and Chile. The featured films showcase exploration, surfing, climbing, biking, skiing and more. Also included in the line up are films that tackle topics as broad as the environment, global awareness and social issues while always maintaining a distinct theme of adventure.

The top 30 films of the festival are hand-picked and showcase locales everywhere from Jackson Hole, WY to the Andes. Films range from "No Impact Man," which outlines attempts of a Fifth-Ave. (NYC) family who strives to yield a life with no net environmental impact for a year, to "Over the Bars" a montage of downhill mountain bike crashes recorded over the last ten years. The entire list of films is featured on Adventure Film Festival's site. The films are generally short, and shown in conjunction with others, giving the event an eclectic fast-paced feel.

Films will be shown later this week at b.side lounge as well as Patagonia, and REI on 28th Street. The event will culminate on Saturday night, 10 p.m. with an after party at b.side lounge. Tickets are available online now, or at Patagonia and The Boulder Theater in Downtown Boulder.

Monday Motivation

Our farmer's market has closed down, CU Stampedes are done for the season and it's officially almost Holiday season. I'd imagine Wal-Mart has Christmas lights out and Downtown Boulder will be lighting up for the Holidays in just two weeks on the 21st.

It is also dark around 6 o'clock in the evening, complicating evening recreational escapes. Some diehard cyclists are lighting to eek out a few more days, and runners have been retreating to their winter jaunts. However, If you're not one of them, this week is a great time to consider your winter workout habits.

One Boulder Fitness, at Broadway and Canyon, is one of Boulder's premier work out facilities. Not to mention convenient for all us downtown types. In addition to strength training and cardio, they offer classes including ski core classes for those looking forward to the slopes this winter.

If you're looking for something a little more spiritually rejuvenating you'll never have a hard time finding a class at Om Time. Their class schedule has a variety of instructors to choose from and runs all day everyday.

Three days of inspiring adventure - Adventure Film Fest comes to Downtown Boulder

If high energy, fast-paced action gets your adrenalin pumping, be sure to check out the fifth annual Adventure Film Festival - presented by Patagonia - happening in Downtown Boulder from November 12-14. Venues, including the Boulder Theater and b.side Lounge, will host a lineup of 20 indy films with subject matters ranging from surfing, climbing, biking and skiing to focusing attention on environmentalism, global awareness and social issues. Adventure Film was created in 2004 by "an international community of risk takers, provocateurs, artists, dreamers, athletes, activists" led by Boulder's own, elite mountain climber Jonathan "Jonny" Copp. Tragically, Copp was killed earlier this year in an avalanche in western China. During the festival, a special episode from the new National Geographic series 'First Ascent: Point of No Return,' will show. The documentary recounts Copp's final expedition to make a first ascent of the 6800-meter Mount Edgar where he lost his life along with Micah Dash and Wade Johnson. This year's festival is sure to celebrate his vision, spirit of adventure and love of life.

Beneficiaries of this year's festival are the Jonny Copp Foundation (dedicated to providing opportunities to bring creative expression and adventure to life through grants, outreach programs exhibits and forums) and Leave No Trace (a non-profit organization that supports sustainable outdoor recreation for the benefit of people and the natural environment.)

After our tease of winter and piles of snow last week, Warren Miller Entertainment's latest ski flick Dynasty continues the temptation for powder at the Boulder Theater through the week. The show is a traditional and revered event for most American skiers and riders. Big budget cinematography and world class skiers make it a worthy spectacle.

Tomorrow is the last night of Jax Fish House 15th Anniversary celebration and starting tonight Hosea Rosenberg will be sharing the 3 signature dishes that won him Top Chef New York. Sounds like tonight, or (tomorrow for Thursday people) could make for a perfect dinner and a movie date.

Friday, join CU's Golden Buffalo Marching Band, Ralphie and athletes for the last Pearl Street Stampede of the year. Afterward, or inspirit of the Stampede, stroll east on Pearl Street and check out the East End's First Friday.

Saturday morning will bring the season's last Farmers' Market. Mingle, relax and pick up some produce for a hearty stew back at home on Sunday, or go easy and grab some Pho for lunch. Then walk up to Folsom to root for the CU Buffs or find a seat to watch the Buffs on a big screen at The Lazy Dog, Draft House or Walnut Brewery.

Call your old Saturday a success and rest up for Sunday morning so you can be fashionably late (or early) for a Bloody Mary at the Boulder Cafe or Q's in the Boulderado. Have a great Wednes-weekend!

The snow on the streets of Boulder is melting just in time for an assortment of weekend events. With warmer weather than we've had all week, it's time for fall football festivities and downtown Halloween parties.

The weekend will kick off tonight with a CU's Homecoming Stampede, complete with CU's Golden Buffalo Marching Band, Chip, athletes, coaching staff and Grand Marshall, Top Chef NY winner Hosea Rosenberg from Jax Fish House.

Need some spooky fun to get you in the the mood for the scariest night of the year? Tonight, the Hotel Boulderado will host a Murder Mystery and Historic Boulder will be sponsoring a Ghost Walk Ghost Talk, with stops at Hotel Boulderado, the Carnegie Library, Boulder Masonic Lodge and the Willard Building. The b.side Lounge will also be hosting their Snow Themed Halloween Party benefiting Ovarian Cancer. If you have never heard of DeVotchKa, tonight is the night to check them out at the Boulder Theater!

"CU in Hollywood" - Top Chef winner grand marshals CU's Homecoming

This year, 1997 engineering physics alumnus (and Top Chef NY champion) Hosea Rosenberg will serve as the Grand Marshal for CU Boulder's Homecoming festivities. On Friday (Oct. 30) following a 5:15 p.m. pardade on the Hill, Rosenberg et al will head to Downtown Boulder for a pep rally held in conjuction with the Pearl Street Stampede on the bricks in front of the Boulder County Courthouse.

Joining Rosenberg (head chef at Jax Fish House Boulder on Pearl Street's West End) at the pep rally / Stampede will be Coach Hawkins, athletes, the Golden Buffalo Marching Band, cheerleaders and Chip (CU's mascot). The Pearl Street Stampedes are quickly becoming a popular tradition and a perfect opportunity for the local community and visitors alike to show their pride and support for CU! Every month Eli adds a few more Downtown Boulder twitter feeds. Some will blow up, others abandoned. However, attempts are being made and every day the tool becomes slightly more ubiquitous. Twitter users in Boulder are surely among the most virtually connected real community around. Yet, the most unique thing about Boulder's twitter users is the quality of both messages and interaction.

There seem to be three unique demographics tweeting in Boulder, originally stemming from the prevalent tech and PR crowd. That, and users can connect with such a variety of users; from the Boulder Bookstore to the T-Bar, Pharmaca to Liquor Mart. There is no commonality, except geography for any Twitter users listed at BoulderDowntown.com. Also, these represent only the tip of the iceberg in Boulder. Twitter regulars such as @andrewhyde, @doylealbee and @pugofwar keep the Boulder twittersphere full of personality. Whether updating daily, or an emerging presence anyone can enjoy a piece of the conversation using this unique medium.

Boulder is unique in their civic adoption of Twitter, and this deserves significant attention. Boulder Parking, Boulder Police, Boulder Parks and Rec., and Go Boulder all maintain a twitter presence. Just following these users will give a great idea of what is going on in the cities government. And of course, for the latest news from Downtown Boulder just follow Downtown Boulder and we'll aggregate the latest and greatest news from all the downtown businesses who have jumped on the twitter bandwagon.

Last Wednesday Night Farmer's Market!

I love winter in Boulder, and as summer events wind down I always get a little giddy with anticipation, however watching fall flicker away is always bittersweet. If you're reminiscing for summer on this warm fall day head over to the Farmer's Market for their last Wednesday night of the season. Cool fall evenings provide a unique ambiance for the market as the sun sets over the Flatirons. The next few days may get cold and wet so grab some vegetables, locally raised beef and create a stew to come home to; a couple pumpkins for the front porch and some tea from Dushanbe Tea House will keep you warm until you get there.

The market is now the only local farmers' markets to be owned by the participating growers. The market does everything they can to make sure vendors sell produce grown in Boulder County and there is nothing sold that is grown or produced outside of Colorado. The Farmer's Market has been operating on 13th st. adjacent to Central Park for over 20 years. With city and state support, students from CU's President Leadership Program researched other markets and helped make the present site selection. It has since become a Boulder tradition, a fabulous venue for fresh produce and a great place to mingle with friends and neighbors.

In two weeks, on October 17, the last arts event will be held in conjunction with the market though market itself will continue on Saturday mornings until November 7th.

BOCO, Dine out, Geek out, Rock out

Although I missed out on the dining out and unfortunately rocking out at BOCO, I can attest the event geeked out as hard as any of Andrew Hyde's other events. Speakers included Boulder locals, such as Brad Feld and Ari Newman as well as various guests from around the country. Unlike previous events based at one venue, BOCO guests were welcomed to breakouts around town. A tab was kept open at Trident, and will surely migrate as the event heads into the evening. Afternoon speakers and breakout sessions will be followed by a performance by local Boulder artists, Paper Bird who will perform at the Boulder Theater.

Sessions on cyborg anthropology were followed up by presentations on lifehacks for balancing work and play in typical Boulder fashion. Twitter was alight with #boco hashtags throughout the event as foodies and geeks mingled in realtime. Following the tradition of Ignite Boulder events, presentations were limited to 10 minutes resulting in an informal and fast paced download of the latest happenings in tech, music and food. Morning sessions focused on the inspirations of food and music, while things got more techy in the second session. After lunch the focus will shift back to more food business and blogging. At three this afternoon the group will be released, breaking out to local coffee shops, followed by happy hour and dinner.

Andrew Hyde's events are not to be missed and a great addition to this town's tech culture. It is nice to see these events encouraging the traditional Boulder mentality, extending into the coffee shops, bars and masses of stragglers on Pearl Street also not "working" on another perfect fall day in Boulder. Beyond the cutting edge of social media and tech culture, entrepreneurs in this town are anxious and able to communicate the implications of their new technologies.

Extra kudos for offering students free admission to the event!

Lights...Camera...Don't Mess Up: The Shoot Out Boulder

The Boulder Shoot Out is back in town this weekend for some hot, fast-paced film-making action in this one of a kind festival. In a nutshell, the crazies that volunteer for this contest have 24 hours to shoot a seven minute video to showcase their film-making talent and speedy sense of work. But there’s a catch: to put the participant’s creativity to the test (because just plain film-making doesn’t cut it these days I guess) all videos must include 11 items to be announced just before the 24 hour count down. One of these items must be shown within the first 30 seconds and any five must be filmed in one location. And if that weren’t enough, all videos must be edited in-camera, meaning the film must be shot in sequence and presented as completely raw footage.

Now, if you’re artistically challenged like myself, there are great ways to experience The 24 hour Shoot Out Film Festival without ever touching a camera. The ten best videos will be presented at the Boulder Theater this Sunday at 1 p.m. Click here for tickets. Or, if you’d like to be a little more involved, head down to the courthouse today at 4 p.m. with a head shot and cell phone to be a “Shooting Star” and help the filmmakers complete their masterpieces.

The contest kicks off today in Downtown Boulder outside the courthouse at 6 p.m. (be there at 4 if you want to sign up as a shooting star or filmmaker). The Shoot Out Boulder will test the determination, imagination and ability to pull an all-nighter (thank you college!) in this fast-paced, muddle of a contest. Happy Autumn! The leaves are turning those lovely shades of mud, old banana and faded traffic cone, ski bums and snobros/bunnies everywhere are jittery with the anticipation of shredding the gnar and scarves will no longer leave you in a puddle on the bricks. Here at Downtown Boulder we are ringing in the new season with my personal favorite Fall pastime, football and beer.

If you can’t get enough of CU Football, join Dan Hawkins at Boulder Draft House for a live recording of the Dan Hawkins Radio Show with Dan himself, Mark Johnson and Larry Zimmer for football chat. Psssst…don’t tell anyone, I’m a Buffs fan!

Let me clarify my headline, I’m a Buffs football fan. You see, I attended a college “where the mountains meet the sea” out west somewhere, and let me assure you with the price of beach real estate, there is no football stadium anywhere in sight! There is something fun and exciting in the air around college football season and I can’t imagine a better school to celebrate with than Boulder’s hometown team.

Don’t get me wrong, my Pepperdine Waves have an outstanding baseball, volleyball and water polo program - not to mention a heck of a surf team! Our big homecoming game centers around basketball (not to mention FREE In-N-Out Burgers)! Orange and blue pride abounds in the ‘Bu’ (what the locals call Malibu) but I have to admit, the Waves have got nothing on CU Buffs fans!

Evidence of this can be seen at the annual Pearl Street Stampedes that rumble through Downtown. The first one of the season was awesome – one of the largest (if not the largest) crowds ever assembled for this event! Thousands of fans of all ages and dressed in their Buffs best, headed down to the 1300 block to cheer on members of the Golden Buffalo Marching Band & football team two weeks ago (prior to the CSU game). So what if “we” haven’t won a game this season? As Scarlett O’Hara said, “tomorrow is another day!”

Tonight, let’s get out in full force and show support for “our” team. What better mental preparation than to see and hear cheering fans, the fight songs and the cheer squad. It’s supposed to be a beautiful evening, so grab your family and friends, put on some black and gold and meet your community in front of the Court House at 7 p.m. The Stampede heads west and ends in the Camera parking lot. And keep your eyes open for a lady wearing a black hoodie with a pink shirt revealing a few white letters (Go Waves!). While I’m proud to support the Buffs, I will forever be a Pepperdonian at heart!

Ignite Boulder was back at the Boulder Theater last night, selling out the venerable establishment and packing its 850 Art Deco seats. With the beer a flowing and a damn good looking crowd, local blog/startup impresario Andrew Hyde kicked off the now sixth incarnation of the self-professed Geek-fest, noting for the first time that the gals outnumbered the guys. Then Ef Rodriguez (@pugofwar) took the stage, a red guitar in had, and led us through heartbreak in the age of twitter to get the flaming ball rolling.

From Jen Wu's ignite on Food Porn (check out her awesome blog userealbutter.com) through Ryan Wagner's exploration of life through video games the speakers and the crowd bonded over brews and the soft lights of their PDAs. Sari Levy brought down the house with an alternative energy idea that mines the jackpot of Alabama's wealth(umm..fat), Naomi Meredith tried to keep up with her own slides though insults and friendship with old Willie S, and then Jen Newell's interactive Swedish lesson twisted our tongues. Christina Sagray's classy look at Classic literature through the eyes of modern chick flicks, folks were rolling in the aisles and shouts of encouragements rang out through the night.

Mountain Standard Time entertained the crowd at intermission, while parts of the funds from the night were going to be donated their way to offset their loss of equipment from theft in Eastern Colorado.

After the break, a sober Vennessa Scheinder regaled us with her DUI experiences (blow then hum...); Luke Tilsley taught us kissing; H. Clisbey gave us her look at bizarre beliefs and crazy people; George G. Smith, dressed in argyle for the ladies, taught us how to Master Debate; and Robot, fresh off the playa at Burning Man, taught us the ins and outs and fire appreciation that is 40,000 drug-crazed freaks in the desert. Huffington Post refugee and current Camera correspondent Dave Burdick used Ghostbusters to show what he learned about his craft, and the night ended with poignant take on Risk and reward from Emmy-winning mountain filmmaker Michael Brown, with film clips of his trips to high altitude locales like Everest with blind man and documenting tragedy and camaraderie of climbing the worlds toughest peaks.

Leaving the packed house, Hyde reminded all of his upcoming BoCo Conference in October so be sure to check it out for more music, conversation and community. A big thank you to all who made it the night happen, it was awesome to it see it in our vibrant Downtown and especially the amazing people that make it what it is.

Starr’s Clothing: 95 Years and shining brighter than ever.

Starr’s Clothing is without a doubt a Boulder institution. For 95 years they have been in Downtown Boulder providing quality clothing to the populace for multiple generations. When Ben Wigotow started in the store 1914, Boulder had just 31,000 residents with miners still in the hills. A recent immigrant from Russia, who was traveling west and stopped in Denver to visit a sister, Wigotow bought his first store at 1025 Pearl Street for $10. He starting selling suits and dry goods, making trips into the mountains to retail his wares to the mining community. Little did he know that over nine decades later his store would stand the test of time.

Although the name has changed (Originally known as A Star Show and Clothing Company), today’s third generation has kept the ethos that has made it such a lasting success. “Selling work clothes has always tapped into the spirit of Boulder,” owner Karen Wigotow says. “Starr’s was always a working man’s establishment where the Levis wall was always prominent. “ Now, 95 years later, customers who went to college here a generation bring their kids in, remarking that “his is where I bought my first hiking boots,” relates Karen Wigotow Having a store that has evolved with Boulder means the Wigotow family has seen the shifts in clients from miners to housewives, and hippies to yuppies. “ We’ve survived a lot of changes, and seen a lot move in and out…every 10 years it’s different, but the core customers always come back, ” said Wigotow.

And although they have moved their address over the years , home was always in Downtown Boulder, usually on or near the 1700 block of Pearl, where most customers remember this venerable institution. In 1947, Ben’s son became owner. He and his wife lived above the store on 17th and Pearl until his death in 1973. In fact the building still bears the old Starr's clothing logo on the alley side. George, like his father before him, made it a point to befriend his customers. “Everyone who comes in is our friend,” remarked Karen Wigotow, who has worked at Starr’s with husband Steve Wigotow since 1973. “We love to hear stories from the customer.” Karen recalls the old space across 17th Street that used to be an old Safeway before it housed Starr’s twin men and women’s’ stores. She still has customers come in who remember the unique floor and reminisce about playing hopscotch on its patterns, or playing under the stairs while their mothers shopped the two story store.

Karen and Steve have owned Starr’s for over a decade, picking up right where father George and Grandfather Ben left off. The key to their longevity on Pearl Street? “We always try to stay with the relaxed Boulder lifestyle as our key along with quality and style…we keep an interesting mix that is different from all the stores.” Karen adds, “By being local we are able to change with our customers more quickly than the chain stores and really get to know them on a more personal level.” With brands like Free People, Tommy Bahama, Levis, Carhartt, Lucky Brand, Royal Robbins and Columbia sportswear, Starr’s continues to attract new customers while being there for the generations that have relied on its quality for over nine decades. With four generations of Wigotows having worked at some point in the store, Starr’s Clothing has no plans of slowing down. “We are already making plans for our 100th Birthday bash!” Happy 95th anniversary to a Downtown Boulder landmark.

City of Boulder's Annual Tulip Bulb Giveaway!

The most anticipated few hours of summer are nearly upon us: no, not the BolderBoulder, not CU's first home game, or even String Cheese at Red Rocks, we are talking about the City of Boulder's Annual Tulip Bulb Giveaway. All those delightful beauties that bloom on the mall every spring are up for grabs as the City's Park and Rec Department hands them out on a first come, first serve basis tomorrow, August 27, starting at 11:30 a.m. on the 1300 Block of Pearl Street. (Note: For City of Boulder residents only)

There will be about 300 to 400 bags of tulips available. Parks and Recreation staff changes the variety and color of the tulips planted on the Pearl Street Mall every year to provide a unique and impressive display each spring. Each fall, staff plant about 15,000 new tulip bulbs. After the bloom, staff removes the bulbs to make way for summer plantings, storing them until the annual tulip bulb give-away each August. Pearl Street Mall tulips are imported directly from Holland from a wholesale provider.

So come on down and grab a big 'ol Boulder bag of blossoming bulbs to make your yard as pretty as April in Downtown! Now if we could just get those buskers and hotdog carts on your lawn too...

BoulderFest is finally here!

It's 4 p.m. on Friday and as the work week ends, the Downtown Boulder team is gearing up for a huge weekend! Meet us on the 1300 block of Pearl Street in one hour to see what we've been up to...

The stage is set and ready for the Rebecca Folsom Band followed by the Nacho Men playing tonight and then tomorrow we will feature Sunday at Vic's, BiG BanG!, Mohammed Alidu & The Bizung Family and the legendary Freddi-Henchi Band. Fencing, tables and chairs are set up and ready for the EIGHT local breweries and TWO local wineries who will be serving up 20 varieties of beers & wine ($5/glass).

We've Tweeted, Facebooked, blogged and even used traditional media to spread the word and now all we need is you to join us! We BoulderFest kicks off tonight from 5 - 10 p.m. and tomorrow from noon - 10 p.m. Click here for a complete list of everything going on.

People Still Use Fax Machines?: What I learned at DBI

In Boulder you can be classified as either one of two things: a student, or not a student. Not students are usually characterized by being tiny cute people with chubby cheeks or grown-up and married. Students will most likely be spotted donning a face that says “economy-eshnonomy...I’ll still find a job” and searching for cheap beer. Well Downtowners, I happen to be one such CU student. And when a student such as me finds themselves all worked up about facing graduation in the upcoming year, there is only one thing for us to do: Get an internship! An unpaid internship! A resume one-liner that says “Hey! Look at me! I’ve had real world experience (sort of)!” And through the magic that is Craigslist, I ended up at Downtown Boulder.

The school year is about to begin yet again (as you may have noticed the increase of traffic, the long lines at Target, and the occasional awkward parent-child duo strolling downtown) which means I will be far too busy reading (or renting the movie), writing (an hour before it’s due) and attending class (maybe) to continue this internship. That’s right folks, your favorite blogger/phone answerer is fleeing the nest onto bigger and better things. As this is my last blog for Downtown Boulder, I’d like to share with you all the valuable lessons I’ve learned.

1. People do actually still use fax machines.
Who knew? Of course, our machine really loved getting paper jams all the time and making loud noises for no apparent reason…but only when I was using it of course. I think it only took me about five or so tries to get it right.

2. Change is good…sometimes.
The first month of my internship was spent working on website system A. The rest were spent working with website system B, which, as it turned out, was quite a bit more difficult than system A so we decided that we would switch back a few weeks after I leave. So a sizable chunk of my time was spent getting to know, updating, and perfecting something this office will never use again.

3. Don’t let your boss leave you for a month for something silly like a wedding – something bad and scary will happen
Did I mention that while this little transition from website system A to B took place my boss was miraculously on the other side of the planet? And just when things start smoothing out, when I start feeling like I have a job and not an internship, he comes back and I get to change the tape dispenser.

4. Bagged lunches are for toddlers
But being 21 in an office means I basically am a toddler, so I guess it’s okay. PB&J for life!

5. NEVER press the “delete all” button.
Seriously. Not for any reason. Do not click it. This was a lesson I learned just last week, after months of the red-haired ball of sarcasm that is my boss telling me I needed to make an “intern mistake” to spice things up. The whole office happens to be chatting by my desk while I’m happily working away on a mundane task like any young person just entering the workforce will, and oops! There goes my office cred. You may recall our calendar being oddly blank and event-less for an entire weekend? You’re welcome.

Before my days of trying to be a real, functional person, I pretty much thought Boulder was about a 10 block radius consisting of campus and The Hill. Now, not only am I a walking Rolodex for Downtown Boulder, but I know that it can be quite easy to be a functional person, all you need is good music to keep you motivated, to-do lists to keep you working, and swag to keep you happy.

And expert skills with a fax machine.

It all Started at The Rio...

Live Life on the Fringe: Boulder Fring Fest is Back in Town

Something wacky, weird and absolutely claptastic is returning to Boulder this week. That something is the 15th Annual Boulder International Fringe Festival. While the name is quite a mouthful, the program will leave you with of bevy-load options. In just 12 days, 70 artists will each be performing multiple shows in 14 of Boulder's favorite venues including Downtown Boulder's own Laughing Goat Coffeehouse, First United Methodist Church, The Dairy, BMoCA, Trident Cafe and b.side Lounge.

The shows will feature all forms of art 'on the fringe' including magic shows, various performance art pieces, puppetry, live music and more. All artists or troupes perform several times throughout the festival, and spectators can rate the shows at the Fringe Fest website. Make sure to check out the program for a full list of events and ticket prices.

For the Kids, stop into the First United Methodist Church for Gregg Tobo's Astonishing Magic Show, an old-time magic show exploring the power of Belief and the origins of destiny, or Comedy A La Carte with Denver-based comedy troupe Mile Hi-Larity delivering a fast-paced blend of improv and original sketch comedy at Trident Cafe. For something more adult, try Good Girls Don't, But I Do, playing at BMoCA, an innovative work incorporating texts, movement, and song in an exploration of what it means to be a woman in contemporary society. Be sure to check the ratings listed for each show (listed on the online program), as some many require adult supervision.

Tonight, don't miss the opening night bash at Naropa with one minute featurettes by all 70 artists and a silent auction of wines and other local goodies from 7 p.m. to midnight.

"Come Back Home" with the Northern Arapaho Tribe

This weekend (Aug. 7-8), as part of Boulder’s Sesquicentennial Celebration, join the Northern Arapaho Tribe for a “Coming Back Home” Gathering. Get in touch with Boulder's native roots, including food, arts and crafts, dancing, drumming and storytelling.

The festivities kicks-off on Friday with Downtown Boulder's Noon Tunes from 12 – 1:30 on the 1300 block of Pearl Street featuring the Sand Creek Band playing contemporary American Indian country and rock. Shortly after, grab the kids for a teepee building demonstration on the Courthouse lawn.

Saturday's (8/8) activities start with a 10 a.m. spiritual healing run/walk. The event, lead by tribal members, honors ancestors killed in the Sand Creek Massacre on November 29, 1864. Starting at Scott Carpenter Park and ending at Pearl Street, it is a spiritual dedication to the people who helped with the healing of the tribes after the Sand Creek Massacre. At 11 a.m. the official welcome ceremony gets underway with the state, city, county, university officials, Arapaho tribal members and color guard. Everyone is welcome to this ceremony. For the rest of the day, stroll down Pearl Street Mall and browse the many arts & crafts booths, munch on tasty traditional fry bread and delight in the drumming, dancing and storytelling performances.

The West End got even more classy this week with the grand opening of Clutter Consignment and re-opening of long-time downtowner, Envision.

Envision, formerly located on Spruce Street, joins the exclusive West End club aside Bart's CD Cellar at 1011 Pearl Street. It brings The West End its only eye and eye-wear specialty shop that will just about blind you with its mod chandeliers and oodles of clean and miraculously fingerprint-free glass. This Monday, our local Flatirons Bank will proudly open its doors at a new branch location on 11th & Canyon in Downtown Boulder. Flatirons Bank invites the entire Boulder community to its grand opening ceremony on August 3 from 3 – 7 p.m. (including a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4:30 p.m. and tasty refreshments).

The bank, Boulder County’s only locally-owned, locally-managed bank, has continued its emphasis on local throughout the design and construction process for the new building. The West End 3k Rumbles Though Downtown

There is this super-elite super-star society of thousands of people that call Boulder their home. Maybe you've heard their gentle steady footsteps passing you on the sidewalk, maybe you've seen them in nothing but shorts on the bike path, or waiting at a crosswalk like they have somewhere really important to be. Know what I'm talking about? Sure you do: runners.

They seem to swarm over boulder as often and as swift as all that cottonwood that somehow finds its way into your mouth or nose. If you tend to avoid certain areas or times of increased runner density, I have some advice for you: stay away from the West End tonight...runners are taking over. If you, however, enjoy seeing people jettison themselves forward in competition or doing so yourself, don't miss 5430 Sports' West End 3K tonight from 6 - 8 p.m.

The Annual West End 3K is a very fast-paced race by the tantalizing shops, restaurants and bars that the West End has to offer. Runners will suck air (or what little we have to offer) twice around down the West End of Pearl Street for a shot at the many awards up for grabs including over $3000 cold, hard, well-earned cash. The race is open to 800 racers total including wheelchair participants, kid's age groups (11 and under race 1500 meters) and walkers.

Plot out your sitting spot or check out the course here. Registration will be available for those last-minute sprinters at the start point between 4 and 5:45 p.m. for $20. This is a great event to watch and an even better one to race!

Downtown Boulder's 31st Annual ArtFair

This weekend, the bricks along Pearl Street (and one block over to the East End) become infused with visual arts of all shapes, sizes colors and textures. Downtown Boulder's 31st annual ArtFair will be in full swing from Saturday (10 a.m. - 8 p.m.) through Sunday (10 a.m. - 5 p.m.) with 150 artists showcasing their works. Booths will line the Pearl Street Mall (from 10th - 14th streets) as well as the 1500 block.

Over 80 artists from Colorado (including 16 who call Boulder home) will participate this year. Returning artists include Yoram Gal from Israel who took home the 2008 ArtFair Best In Show title. Gal paints in water based colors. In his Artist Statement, he says, "In my paintings I try to capture fleeting moments of intense dramatic, comic, grotesque, lyrical and melancholy interactions between people..."

While enjoying ArtFair and the beautiful scenery throughout Downtown Boulder, please remember to visit the business community (which is 85% locally owned and operated). The Downtown Boulder Business Improvement District runs from 8th to 21st streets and Arapahoe Avenue to Pine Street. Downtown's Top Chef Master Tomorrow!

Another famous face from Downtown Boulder food lore reigns on Bravo tomorrow: Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson, the famed multi-syllabic named chef/owner of our own world renowned Frasca Food and Wine on the lovely East End, takes on competitors on TV's Top Chef Masters. Bravo's first season Top Chef spin off features four famous chefs per episode battling it out under the camera's bright glare for up to $100,000 for a charity of their choice. Already named one of Food & Wine Magazine's Best New Chefs, Mackinnon-Patterson takes his Northern Italian inspired cuisine to Bravo's L.A. studios to continue Downtown Boulder's amazing record of bringing the world its own Top Chefs ( See Hosea Rosenberg, last year's Top Chef Season 5 winner and chef at Jax Fish House).

Tomorrow on episode five we finally get to see Mackinnon-Patteron in culinary combat. He will be playing for hometown charity Denver's Children's Hospital, a choice close to his heart as his own daughter received life saving treatment there. Wednesday evening you can see Chef Lachlan test his meddle with Chefs Michael Chiarello, Rick Moonen, and Nils Noren to have a chance to go on and meet up with finalists from the first four episodes. Those include notable names Hubert Keller of Fleur de Lys in San Francisco, Suzanne Tracht of Jar in Los Angeles, Chicagoan Rick Bayless of Frontera Grill, and Anita Lo of Annisa in New York.

So root, root, root for the home team as Chef Lahclan ponies up his best Fruilian fare for the judges and tune in tomorrow at 8 p.m. on Bravo. Who knows, maybe Downtown Boulder could have TWO Top Chefs...

At 80 years young, Gay Curran teaches the art of watercolor to students three times a week. Her beginning and advanced classes consists of aspiring artists who are between the ages of 79 -94. Her classrooms are at the Golden West and Flatirons Terrace retirement homes.

This Sunday, July 12, Boulder Arts and Crafts Gallery in Downtown Boulder will host a reception for Curran's students from 3 - 5 p.m. The public is invited to come out and meet the artists who will be discussing their works. Boulder Arts and Crafts Gallery's Older Boulder Artists exhibit is on display now through July 26.

At 8:30 p.m., the rally officially gets underway at the Camera parking lot for some adrenaline-pumping, speed-or-die racing. Say "Sesquincentennial Stroll" Five Times Really Fast.

For this year's July 4th and Boulder's 150th Birthday, the city of Boulder is celebrating with a Sesquicentennial Stroll. The day-long festivities include live music, tasty barbecue, arts and crafts, a bike parade and of course, fireworks.

The day begins at Chautauqua with an official welcome ceremony from 11 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. followed by the Colorado Music Festival Brass Band with an outside performance accompanied by delicious barbecue in the dining hall. In the spirit of creating a sustainable city, this event will be zero-waste.

From 1:30 - 5:30 you are invited to stroll to six city sights for entertainment, education and fun. Make your way over to the Columbia Cemetery for a "Stroll with the Spirits" from 1:30 - 4:30 p.m. Or if you're looking for something a little more lively, check out the Fourth of July Children's Bike Parade in Central Park from 2:30 - 5:30 p.m. (be there early to decorate). If your in the mood for some dessert after your barbecue, head to the Boulder History Museum for a Boulder birthday cake 1 - 4:30 p.m. While you're snacking wander their "Only in Boulder" exhibit while your tots pan for gold and get artsy. If you're interested in a brief history lesson, make your way to the CU Heritage Center and their "Boulder and CU Through the Years" exhibit from 1 - 4:30 p.m. If you're looking to make your Independence Day a more global experience, stroll down to Pearl Street 3 - 5:30 p.m. to celebrate Boulder's many Sister City communities in Africa, Asia and Central America. Or if you're ready to just sit back and relax with food and friends, join the Bluegrass Concert at Central Park 2 - 5:30 p.m. to enjoy the great Summer sun.

At 8 p.m. make your way to Ralphie's Independence Day Blast at Folsom Stadium for Boulder's 150th Birthday Party, music, and fireworks until 10 p.m.

It's only Monday but this weekend is gearing up to be a spectacular mix of community events and great weather!

This Friday is Boulder's First Friday, where businesses celebrate the first Friday of each month. It all kicks off with Noon Tunes featuring Flexigrass with Pete Wernick from Noon to 1:30 p.m. Earthwood Gallery opens its July exhibit of Bob Rickard, fine metal artists, from 6 - 9 p.m. Ten20 will be offering a free polish change complete with M&Ms and Sex in the City all day. prAna will join in with an art show of oil painter Bridgid Lupetin. Boulder Theater continues its Beat the Heat Film Series with a showing of Dark Side of the Rainbow at 8 p.m. for a full list of First Friday events, see our events calendar.

If you're not too tuckered out from Friday's events, Downtown Boulder is celebrating Fourth of July (this Saturday) with quite a bang! Start it off with everyone's favorite Farmers' Market followed by a bluegrass concert in the bandshell. Centro, West End Tavern and The Blending Cellar are all hosting special July 4th events: Centro will have a tasty barbeque, West End Tavern will be offering specialty drinks like a pop rock cockatail and a free shuttle to the fireworks, and The Blending Cellar will celebrate with a red, white and sparkling flight. Boulder will also be celebrating its Sesquicentennial with a Sesquicentennial Stroll through several of our favorite historic landmarks. Check our blog on Thursday for more details on this event. ZimFest 2009 is Here!

For over 18 years the Zimbabwean Music Festival has brought a weekend of African song and dance, workshops, art, film and much much more to Boulder! Over 500 people of all ages and skill levels will register for lessons and workshops on marimba, mbira, singing, dance, drum, hosho and more. Many others will attend the over 50 hours of concerts held at Boulder Theater, Boulder County Farmer's Market and Boulder's Central Park.

The evening concerts kick-off tonight at the Boulder Theater with youth talent featuring Kutandara Youth Ensembles, Shumba Youth Marimba and more. On Friday Aivani Masango's Pachedu and Julia Chigamba's Chinyakare Dance and Drum are headlining. Check out a video of Pachedu and Chinyakare. The evening concerts will wrap up on Saturday with Panjea and The Bongo Boys of Zimbabwe. For a full list of all performances at Boulder Theater click here.

That is certainly not all for ZimFest concerts however! Outdoor concerts will be held Today through Saturday in Boulder's Central Park from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

For a payment of $15 at registration you can sign up for countless instrument, dancing and singing workshops. Bikers and Peds Rebel! Parking Spaces Day This Friday!

It's Parking Spaces Day this Friday in Downtown Boulder! On June 12th East End businesses will transform 8x17 plots of grade-A storefront parking into community spaces. Take a mini-exercise class, work on your putting skills, relax and read a book, do some yoga or sit back and chat with other visitors in the variety of spaces the East End has to offer! Pedestrians and bikers can play parking spaces Bingo by downloading a card here and getting stamps along the way. Once filled, you can enter to win a slew of prizes at the end of the day.

As part of Walk & Bike Month, this event strives to promote a cleaner planet and brighter community. This day will help visualize a world-wide movement for replacing space for cars with space for humans. Parking Spaces Day dares to imagine a place where the 3,778 parking spaces in Downtown Boulder are no longer needed and can be transformed into free bike racks and community spaces for all.

Momentum, one of the many businesses participating this Friday, will be celebrating their 2nd birthday with cake, a massage chair and drawing for a $50 gift certificate at their space. During the day they will also be unveiling their life-size galimoto, a traditional Kenyan bicycle push toy, created from scrap in collaboration with Community Cycles. The Cup will also be participating by following the footsteps of Portland, Missouri and New York by offering bike corrals in an effort to reduce the number of bikes locked up to trees, benches or street signs. Joyful Furniture, another participant, will be holding a paint-your-own-park-bench activity in their 136 square feet. Other businesses participating will be Barrett Studio, Aji, Full Cycle, Urban Pearl and Violette.

Bands...Bricks...Enough Said.

For ten glorious nights well-loved local bands will rock out on the 1300 block of Pearl Street for the masses. Join the 1,500+ people that swarm the bricks weekly to engage in eating, listening, dancing and general tomfoolery...all for free!

The 12th year of this quintessential Boulder Summer event kicks off TONIGHT with Funkiphino, a band that’s sure to get your feet tapping. Rock out to covers of the classics (think Bille Jean and Repect) with what Westword Magazine called The Best Funk Band. Sample their music and preview their shows here.

June will feature not only funk, but Latin-infused rock as well as soul-stirring blues. Soul Sacrifice on the 17th will play their saucy renditions of Santana favorites such as Oye Como Va and Black Magic Woman. On the 24th will be The Informants, voted Best Blues Band by Westword Magazine. Known as “Denver’s little secret”, this band features eclectic upbeat modern roots numbers with sex-kitten vocalist Kerry Pastine.

Ringing in the first day of July is The Champions. Performing the music of Journey, Heart, Boston, Stevie Nicks and many more, The Champions will rock you back to the 80s. On July 8th, The Fab-4 will recreate the sounds of The Beatles, and then Hazel Miller, Aretha's self-proclaimed soul sister will sing on the 15th. Homeslice, a vocal and horn musical powerhouse will then take the stage on the 22nd and the Legendary 4-Nikators will follow on the 29th with 60's and 70's Motown.

Wrapping up the series in August will be Chris Daniels & the Kings on the 5th, a horn band playing Funk/Jump Blues/Rock 'n Roll followed by Opie Gone Bad, an alternative rock/funk band on the 12th.

Love watching movies? Love making movies? Listen up! People Productions and Boulder Outdoor Cinema are teaming up for a summer of local and independent filmmaker love. Aspiring artists are encouraged to create a one minute video for the chance to have it viewed at the weekly Boulder Outdoor Cinema. At the end of the summer, the three best videos will be chosen for cool and handy prizes like a Flip HD video camera, a Blu-ray player, or a free membership to Boulder Digital Arts.

People Productions has been supporting the local film industry for over 25 years. First Friday, Jewish Festival, Outdoor Cinema and More!

This weekend, there are tons of activities happening throughout Downtown Boulder. Here’s some highlights:

On Friday (June 5), Pearl Street’s East End merchants (from the 1500 – 2100 blocks), are kicking off their own version of First Fridays. Look for balloons up and down the East End and check out some of the great businesses that occupy the blocks just east of the Bricks. First Friday Boulder is also a great resource of special happenings and events throughout downtown. Tee and Cakes, Boulder Arts and Crafts Gallery & Earthwood Gallery are just some of the businesses celebrating First Friday. Don’t forget to check out Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art’s(BMoCA) Grand Reopening Celebration!

On Saturday (June 6), the Boulder County Farmers’ Market will be in full swing between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. During the same time period, the 5th Annual Mapleton Hill Boulder Historic District Rummage Sale will be taking place. Over 40 historic homes will be offering fabulous finds, collectibles, toys & gear, clothes, furniture, kitchenware, lemonade, coffee, baked goods and more! At 2 p.m., the West End Tavern hosts their version of the Belmont Stakes with Hermit Crab Races, $5 Belmont Breezes & Maker’s Mark Mint Juleps. Later in the evening, Boulder Outdoor Cinema starts their summer season with AIRPLANE. Gates open at 7 p.m. with lots of pre-show contests, short films and live entertainment! Meet at Full Cycle (18th and Pearl streets) at 9 a.m. Before the ride, Michelle Karl will lead the group in a short exercise on balancing hectic lives. In the late morning, the Pearl Street Mall welcomes the Boulder Jewish Festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. from the 1200 – 1500 blocks. May Flowers Bring June…Showers

We all know Boulder’s weather is a little wacky, but with all this rain splashing down on summer, just look on the bright side: at least it’s not 100 degrees (yet)! When the seasons do their switcheroo, sometimes it’s easy to forget how one might spend their day in such disagreeable weather. So when you’re staring out your window searching for the sun remember that there’s plenty to be done in Downtown Boulder – even on rainy days!

If your bike is rather ill-equipped for the rain like mine, hop on our town’s fantastic transportation system to get where you need to go. Order a warm breakfast and coffee at Foolish Craig’s, because who wants to eat a bowl of cereal and start the day off cold? Not me! With its cozy, inviting environment, it’s the perfect place to hide out and fill up for the day. If you’re lucky enough you’ll get a seat by the window and watch all the poor suckers that forgot their raincoats that morning.

After you’re fat and happy with something yummy like ‘A Bunch of Hooey’ or a ‘Tofu Scramble’, make a dash for the Pearl Street Mall. It’s time for some shopping and first on the list is Into the Wind! This store is the perfect place to soak up some cheer for any age. If the colors, toys, and games don’t put a smile on your face then abandon all hope and wait for the sun to come out. But if you’re a kid at heart,like me, this is the perfect stop on a rainy day.

Next up is Peppercorn. This store just oozes homey goodness - I can spend hours in here rain or shine. I always make an effort to throw some kind of gathering when it’s nasty outside and Peppercorn is the perfect place for planning the party. Here you can browse the cookbooks for a great rainy recipe, grab some drink mixers to warm your spirits, or wander amongst the cookware of your dreams.

Then head to Outdoor Divas for planning of a different sort. Here you can gear up for the next sunny day and outdoor adventure be it hiking, biking, fishing or swimming. For those who wouldn't consider themselves divas, head to Boulder Army Store, or for the tykes try Little Mountain Outfitters.

Ready for some downtime? Hit up the Boulder Book Store. With three stories of literary magic hopefully you can find something that sparks your interest. With a new paperback in hand, settle in at Bookend Cafe for a hot chocolate or just down the road at Trident for their famous cider.

If you can eventually pull yourself out of the book, wind down with a stroll down Boulder Creek Path. If you’ve never been down the path during rain, make a mental note to do so; the bikers are few, there won't be gaggles of dogs getting in your way, and the greenery and creek plump up for spectacular sounds and sights.

Back in the comfort of your own home, dry off, get warm, and although I’m sure you had a fabulous day in rainy Downtown Boulder, curse the rain and hope that tomorrow is one of Boulder's 300 days of sun.

Help Boulder Filmmakers Make it Big! Vote!

If you were perusing the bricks last week you may have run into John Goldman and Anna Salim, two Boulder High Alumni, lugging around their camera equipment and crew. The two hit Downtown Boulder favorites such as Old Tibet, Boulder Book Store, and Boulder Theater to film a short promotional trailer for Goldman’s feature project Paul Sussman’s Eleven-Step Guide to Self-Actualization. Goldman (director/writer) and Salim (producer) entered their work in a Netflix and Film Independent contest for first-time filmmakers. Among 2,000 other aspiring filmmakers Goldman and Salim’s film has now made it through to the semifinals with nine other contestants.

From June 5th – June 10th the trailers with be posted online for the general public to whittle down to just five. The films of those five trailers will then be viewed and judged by a panel of accomplished filmmakers and industry executives chaired by actor Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men). Winners will receive a $150,000 cash production grant as well as filming resources for the total value of a $350,000 grand prize. The winning production will also be sold over Netflix.

Goldman remarks, “I’ve had a big crush on Netflix for years. My friends thought I was crazy, but I knew all those little red love letters were a two-way street. I’m so excited about this opportunity, I have to say, my queue runneth over.” Colorado has also expressed its pride in Goldman. The Colorado State Film Commissioner Kevin Shand adds that “this is just another example of the talented filmmakers we have here in Colorado.” Goldman is just one more person helping to put Downtown Boulder on the map.

Social Networking in Downtown Boulder

Just back from a four hour Social Media conference and feeling inspired by what I learned! I'm writing my first blog post as Terri Takata-Smith rather than the Director of Marketing and Communications for Downtown Boulder. What's the difference? I'm humanizing my writing! I'm throwing out my tendency to write a blog posting as a traditional press release.

So what else did I learn? We (Downtown Boulder), me (Terri), us (Eli & Claire) need to write with passion. Be human. Inspire conversations. Listen to what other people are saying! Sounds easy but forcing myself to approach Social Media with a different perspective from my "classically" trained communications/marketing background is going to take some work. It's a fantastic challenge and one that I'm eager to master.

One of the best things about Downtown Boulder is all of the different activities happening at any given day that appeal to a wide variety of tastes and interests. This Saturday and Sunday thousands of individuals with active and healthy lifestyles will head to the Pearl Street Mall for the Dick's Sporting Goods BolderBOULDER SportsExhibit. The two day event leads up to the 31st annual BolderBOULDER 10K road race happening on Memorial Day. The SportEXHIBIT is the only place participants can pick-up a packet or register over the weekend prior to Monday’s race.

Meanwhile, a local Downtown Boulder cupcake bakery will be hosting a not-to-be-missed event of their own. On Saturday (May 23) at 1 p.m., the World League of Competitive Eating is teaming up with Tee & Cakes (1932 14th St.) for the first ever CUPCAKE CRAM! World Champion Dale "Mouth of the South" Boone will take on four other local competitors in a quest to cram as many cupcakes down their mouths as possible in 10 minutes! Prizes range from a dozen cupcakes a month for a year to an enthusiastic high five!

Tee & Cakes is located along Downtown Boulder's Sweet Street (14th Street between Pearl and Walnut streets) nestled between Belvedere Belgian Chocolate Shop and Cefiore Italian Frozen Yogurt. Run by pastry chef Kim Boos and graphic designer Brian Wood, Tee & Cakes is a cupcake bakery, wedding and custom cake shop, coffee & espresso stop and retail apparel store. Cupcakes are baked fresh six days a week (closed Sundays). Although the cupcake menu changes daily, custom orders are always available. This delectable cupcake eatery received some excellent press coverage in January when CBS4 News ran a feature highlighting Tee and Cakes' wildly popular Chocolate Bacon Cupcake (available Saturdays and Mondays as well as by custom order)!
