Spotlight On the Ice Rink

When One Boulder Plaza was being built, the developers wanted not only to create a new building structure, but to include a public amenity as well. Paul Eklund, a managing partner of One Boulder Plaza and owner of PN Eklund Interests, Inc., took the time to recreate for us the complicated process of designing, planning, and getting permission to build the Ice Rink. "I can't remember whose idea it was first to have an Ice Rink," he said, "but it made sense to us because of the success of the old rink, which was over by the Tea House." Richard Foy of CommArts came up with the oval design, reminiscent of an Italian piazza, which could easily double as both an Ice Rink and a community plaza.

However, the site was not big enough to accommodate the oval design. The road was initially a straight two-way with large sidewalks, and cut right through the middle of the planned rink's space. Jerry Lee, of Lee Real Estate Development LLC, went to Molly Winter at the DMC to propose a partnership. In return for license to use the City's land and to curve the road to accomodate the rink, One Boulder Plaza would stage seasonal events in the space all year-round. The City gave the go-ahead, and gained not only a community gathering place but the opportunity to further develop their long-range plan to connect the City Park on Arapahoe with the Downtown Mall. With the Farmer's Market, the Ice Rink, and other events extending from Walnut to Arapahoe on 13th, it was a natural way to bring the two public spaces together.

The next hurdle was, of course, how to generate ice! Happily, that particular dilemma was solved by the building that One Boulder Plaza was to replace. A large rooftop chiller/ac unit had been installed only two years before, and was going to be trashed along with the rest of the old building. They salvaged the unit and had it converted to work as an ice rink chiller. The next problem was where to place it, as these units are loud, generate a lot of heat, and are not particularly pleasant to look at. The solution? Put it in the parking garage! Not only is it out of the way, but it keeps the garage warm in the winter as well.

It's not only the cooperation between the City and One Boulder Plaza that brought Downtown an Ice Rink. "It's an expensive operation," Paul points out, "and it's funded partly through sponsorships." Sponsors are Downtown Boulder, Inc., Boulder Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, Western Disposal, First National Bank of CO, Play it Again Sports, Mike's Camera, Rocky Mountain Theater for Kids, Tibet Carpet & Home, American National Bank, Daily Camera, and KBCO. The generosity of the sponsors and the dedication of the partners at One Boulder Plaza even goes so far as to donate parts of proceeds to Boulder Ice, a non-profit.

The value to downtown makes it worth the cost. Ashley Ortiz, the Business Manager of the Ice Rink, brought us up to date on the Ice Rink’s present and future:

DOWNTOWN BOULDER: What inspired you to get involved with the Ice Rink downtown?

ASHLEY ORTIZ: I have been involved in ice skating in the area for 21 years. I grew up skating in Boulder and Denver, training as a figure skater, and went on to teach skating at CU, and also played on the women’s hockey team. After college, my father (a local hockey player) and I started a nonprofit called Boulder Ice to put together plans for a year-round ice skating rink and community center at the undeveloped Valmont City Park site. Several years into this effort, the partners at One Boulder Plaza approached me and asked if I would be interested in helping them develop a business to offer ice skating each winter season in the plaza. I jumped on the opportunity, as it offered both a way to continue to raise awareness and support for Boulder Ice’s long-term efforts and a way to get Boulder skaters on the ice right away.

DB: How long has the Ice Rink been open?

ASHLEY: The Ice Rink is now in its third season and is growing tremendously each year. We had 8,500 skaters the first season, and close to 14,000 last year. So far, in the first few weeks of being open this year we have seen even more happy skaters coming to the rink than we expected.

DB: How do you get professional ice-skaters involved? Any famous ones?

ASHLEY: For our opening show, Light Up the Ice, which is held in conjunction with Downtown Boulder’s Switch on the Holidays event, I have worked with the Rocky Mountain Figure Skating Club to find skaters to perform. The show consists of 10 to 15 competitive skaters from the metro-Denver/Boulder area. We have been approached by a group that puts on ice shows with famous skating stars, and are looking into the possibility of bringing a show like that to The Ice Rink in future years, in addition to our annual Light up the Ice Show.

DB: What is the Ice Rink's most popular event?

ASHLEY: Light up the Ice, with the performers and discounted skating, is a very popular event that officially kicks off each skating season. We also have a great following for our once-a-month free skating and skate rental days which are sponsored by local businesses, and our monthly theme skates which include 2 for 1 admission, giveaways, decorations, games, and free photos by Mike’s Camera.

Event Spotlight: the Holidays Downtown

It's a common cliche that "the holidays come earlier every year". This is one of those cliches, I think, that is a cliche for a reason. It seems like only yesterday we were setting up for ArtFair. Then Fall Festival and the Munchkin Masquerade were upon us and done before I knew it, and next week is Thanksgiving! Half the stores downtown have their Christmas displays up, and here I still have Halloween decorations hanging from my window at home. Another cliche comes to mind: If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Spotlight on First Bite Boulder

Restaurants in Boulder are finally getting their due -- it's about time! Last month, Gourmet Magazine recognized Frasca as one of the top fifty restaurants in the country (read about it, plus a special interview with Sommelier and Co-Owner Bobby Stuckey, here).

And now, First Bite Boulder kicks off today with a party at the St. Julien Hotel. There will be a public event in the Lobby from 5pm - 9pm, with complimentary appetizers from Wild Oats, cocktail specials from Level Vodka, and live music from Sambadende. Or, if you just can't wait for the food fun to begin, a $75 ticket will get you into Jill's Restaurant for Cocktail Hour at 5pm, Drink Contest at 6pm, and a 4 course seated dinner at 7pm.

And that's just the beginning! 40 of Boulder's top restaurants will offer a special three course $26 prixe fixe dinner menu, tomorrow Saturday November 11th to Saturday November 18th. Many of the participating restaurants are downtown: This promises to be an amazing week -- great food, great prices, and a great line-up of restaurants. Almost all of the restaurants have already posted menus at firstbiteboulder.com, so if you need help narrowing it down (I know I do), the website is full of great information.

We'll be sharing our experiences with you; send us yours!

Spotlight on Frasca

When Boulder’s own Frasca Restaurant made Gourmet magazine’s “America’s Top Fifty,” Boulder restaurants were all the buzz. Co-owners Bobby Stuckey, wine director, and Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson, head chef, have created a neighborhood eatery which has become a gem in the fantastic Boulder restaurant scene.

Frasca’s philosophy is based on the classic restaurants of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in Northeast Italy, combining the traditions of warmth and hospitality with customary Friuli cuisine to create a unique dining experience. To enhance this feeling, Bobby and Lachlan travel with the entire Frasca staff to Italy yearly to continually develop their knowledge of the region. It is a truly wonderful learning experience for the staff and sets the duo apart from many restaurateurs.

Bobby and Lachlan met while working at the exclusive French Laundry restaurant (#3 on Gourmet’s list), in the heart of Napa Valley. French Laundry won numerous awards with Bobby as sommelier and Lachlan as chef de partie under world renowned chef Thomas Keller. Bringing their expertise to Boulder, Frasca was born out of their passion for the vitality and soul of Friuli Italy. This inspiration is best explained by the co-owner himself, Bobby Stuckey.

DOWNTOWN BOULDER: What is the inspiration/ motivation behind Frasca?

BOBBY STUCKEY: Frasca is motivated by the classic restaurants of Friuli Italy. These are family restaurants that have been at it for over one hundred years and still seem classic and fresh. If Lachlan and I can work on just one restaurant and have it keep getting better then we will be following our inspiration.

DB: Why did you choose Downtown Boulder as the home of Frasca?

BOBBY: Boulder excited us because of the chance to work with a great farm community. The fact that we can have John Long drop off such great pork and the local farmers can follow him up with wonderful greens is great.

DB: Tell us more about your philosophy behind wine and spirits at Frasca and your extensive wine cellar.

BOBBY: The philosophy is based on offering a great glass or bottle of wine in the right class and at the right temperature for twenty dollars over retail. What that translates to is people driving up from Denver or driving down from Aspen to enjoy the wines of our list because they can’t afford not to. We now see a lot of collectors in the wine industry come back the very next night to drink something off the list because they say they can’t afford to leave the wine on our list for someone else.

DB: Has making the 2006 Gourmet Magazine Top 50 list created more buzz for Frasca within Boulder and/ or the Denver Metro area?

BOBBY: Gourmet’s top fifty list is great because it shows me that if you want to start a restaurant with humble beginnings you can go as high as you want. You just need to show up and cut some Prosciutto and bus some tables and pour some Tocai. The best buzz that it has created is that peers of mine now want to come to the Denver metro area and open national caliber restaurants.

DB: What is your favorite menu item?

BOBBY: My favorite menu item is the Salumi plate. Artisan pork from John Long is right with it.

Event Spotlight: Halloween Downtown

Despite temperatures in the 30s, there was a great turn-out for the Munchkin Masquerade on Pearl Street Mall last night! Stores up and down the mall, and even as far up as the St. Julien Hotel, were in the spirit with Treat Stops, and they weren't disappointed. Super-heroes from Spiderman to Batman to Superman were out in full force, as were the many Harry Potters, Elmos, pirates and fairies.

My personal three-way tie for the most original kid costumes I saw were Ralphie the CU Buffalo, an iPod, and a rollercoaster ride. Sadly, I was too busy fielding basketballs at the Downtown Boulder Treat Stop to snap pictures of them. But you know who you are -- if you've got pictures, send them in!

I saw quite a few parent-child costume teams as well, which made me smile. I always wish for a good excuse to dress-up on Halloween, but wasn't quite ready to brave the cold this time. Kudos to those who did; I think my favorite adult-child costume team was Yoda and Princess Leia.

Our Deputy Director, when pressed, estimates a turn-out of about 4,000 to 5,000 people last night during the Masquerade, which ran from 3pm to 5pm. As we were packing up our Treat Stop it only got busier, so I can only imagine the fun later on last night!

Here's hoping you all had a great time, got lots of candy, stayed warm, and had a Happy Halloween!
